I've been living in NYC for almost three years, the first two I lived with my best friend and for the past 6 have been living with my boyfriend.. Previous to NYC I've always lived by myself and I am STARVING to have my own space again!!! I love my boyfriend, and we get a long great, but I NEED my own place to go home to and be alone whenever I choose.. BUT, as new yorkers know, RENT IS CRAZY.. especially when you are not making that much money.. I am working an office job with a pretty minimal hourly pay
and am working tons of hours to save up.. Does anyone know any
know of rent stabilized programs or buildings or where to go to apply for income based affordable housing here in NY?? I wouldn't mind Queens or maybe even Brooklyn, but I would like a decent apartment in a fairly decent neighborhood.. ANY suggestions?? Maybe you know a better place to look for better pay?? ANY HELP IS WELCOME.. Thanks.

Your best bet is to try the lottery (the housing lottery, not the gambling lottery).

You get an application, and all the eligible applicants are entered into a lottery and the "winners" are given first dibs on the affordable housing units that are part of any new development. If it's just you, apply for a studio or 1 bedroom. You will never in a million years (ok, it's not a million years. It's more like 20 to 25 year wait) get something larger for a single person in one of these draws.

This site lists current affordable housing. Right now it's just for Brooklyn and the Bronx. The lotteries are for future housing.

You can also try checking into some Mitchell-Lama housing.

I'd say go for Forrest Hills Queens. Cheaper than Manhattan and it is on an express line.

The city costs money. If you really want to save on lodging move to a place like Arizona or Florida.

I think you need to let us know how much your budget is. Even in crappy neighborhoods the rent is still ridiculous.

My suggestion to you would be to go visit some neighborhoods first and then go to a broker in one of those neighborhoods and tell them you are looking for a rent stabilized apartment. They can definitely help you find.

I would also suggest looking at craigslist.org

no its not, except u are sharing hire on a house or a small house with somebody else. nyc is an incredible city to bypass to, yet except ur making around $150k or extra, u wont have the money to rejoice with the city. id say why waste ur time? theres too lots crime and pollutants there in any case!

You wont get many answers of any worth asking the question on Answers section aimed at the UK population.

However good luck. When you get fixed up, can I come and stay ? Thanks. I've never been to America. Perhaps you can show me around. :p
