My dad has been wanting to take me hunting, and so far I haven't been interested, although lately I'm thinking of giving it a try. If I wanted to buy a rifle or shotgun in Indiana, what's the leg work requirement?

I hear you can walk in Walmart and buy one and just fill out a questionaire.. is that true? or do I need to get any kind of license before hand?

Let another Indiana person answer this for you.

First off to user asgrafxx, You don't have to register firearms in the great state of Indiana.

I would walk into a Gander, Bass Pro, or some other sporting store before I bought from Walmart.

You won't need any license to buy a shotgun.

Real easy assuming you have a drivers license, or valid government issued id and can pass a background check. You will have to fill out a form 4473 that's your standard firearm application. It ask you about you citizenship are you a drug user, are you the person buying the firearm have you ever been convicted of a felony that's what it asks basically. If you never had a background check or the systems down it can take longer.

Yes, you can walk in to Wal-Mart, "fill-out" the paperwork, and during "Normal-Hours" of operation, you could have a decision in a matter of 10-15minutes, on permission to purchase a "rifle or shotgun."
They still have to do "a check"(background) on you, when you purchase any "firearm," but there is "No Waiting Period"(5-10 Days) on them, like there is if you "Purchase" a Handgun...
The good thing is this; If you have "No Record"(Criminal) and you answer all questions, Truthfully. Then if you ever decide to purchase anymore "Firearms" you won't have to wait as long on your "Check"(Background), it will be on "File"(Record).
If you decide on "purchasing" a "shotgun" for yourself, so you can "Hunt" with your Daddy, why not ask your Daddy to go with you when you "purchase" your new "shotgun," so you can "get and use" your Daddy's expert advice and experience!
He can Help you choose a "shotgun" that is "suited" to your needs, balance, and feel! Using the "Right-Type" of "shotgun" will give you more pleasure, and enjoyment, along with some Pride and a good Memory of the time with your Daddy while buying your new "shotgun."
Good Luck! I Hope you will have as much Fun "Hunting and Shooting" your "New-Gun," and spending "The Time" with your Daddy, as I have "Hunting and Shooting" with my "Buddies!

I'm not sure about your state, but yeah.. Most states an adult can walk into a store and purchase a hunting rifle or shotgun.
If you want to purchase a handgun you'll have to submit to a background check.
All guns must be registered.

Even if you're not into hunting and not willing to shoot a deer or what ever. Head out and enjoy spending time with your dad, but learn how to handle your weapon. Just in case you have to defend yourself against an animal.

I go out every year. Along with my gun I take a camera. I have some awesome photos hanging on my wall!

When you buy a gun at Wal Mart, you have to fill out the paperwork, then they call in your information, and if everything is ok, you are clear to buy the gun. You have to be at least 18 in order to buy a shotgun or rifle, though. Also, you need to make sure that your local Wal Mart sells firearms. Alot of them are dropping guns from their inventory.

i agree with wall id its okay to buy a gun from wal-mart ( i never have ) if price is all you are worried about but since it is your first go to a REAL outdoor store. most Walmart's dont have anyone on the gundesk that i would call an "expert" they are quite good with what they have and what they do every day but they are not "in the gun business" usually you have older models and outdated models. BPS is expensive IF you have an ACADEMY try them. get something you like the looks of and feels good that you can afford. that way you wont have buyers remorse if you hate it..REMINGTON 870 is the way to go

The easy part is the paperwork. The agony is that there's such a huge selection!

It is not difficult if you don't have a criminal record. Walmart has some nice shotguns and their prices are very reasonable.

It depends on which state you live in. Here in California there is a 10 day wait on all firearms. In other states they use the Instant Check program.

I believe it may vary from state to state, but generally, it is very easy to buy a shotgun.
The Mossberg 500 Persuader is a sweeeet shotgun and can be had brand new for less than $300. My favorite. :-)
