If you are looking for a hatchback with space for 5people, the compact cars like the WagonR, Zen Estilo and Santro are out of question. Contrary to what most most people think, these cars do not classify themselves are five seaters. They may have seatbelts for 5 people, but not the space. Comfort for 5 people comes with the shear width of the car which is were the Getz, U-VA, Swift, Indica and Palio really scores. The likes of the Zen, Wagon R, Santro are much more compact and easier to squeeze through tight spaces in crowded roads. But a larger car like the Getz or U-VA makes better sense, if you have the budget. They offer space of a mid size sedan, comfort, feel and safety of a much larger car. Let me highlight the main advantages and disadvantages of the cars you have listed.
Zen Estilo: compact,fuel-efficient,maintan... cost is less, stylish to some but not to all, plastics are acceptable, strict four seater, engine not very responsive, handling is not as good as the old one.
Santro: Hyundai's service is good, Reliable, fuel economy is not bad either, peppy engine, resale value, ride at the rear is poor, quality interiors.
Wagon R:everything that the Zen Estilo is. Plastics are of inferior quality.
Getz: This car is big, easy to drive, gearshift quality is great, interior space is great for 5 people, cabin is airy, plastics dont have nice texture though, engine is good for both relaxed performance and decent fuel economy.
If you need a five seater family car which will be used mostly in the city, the U-VA makes sense. Firstly, it has got a 1200cc engine which means that it gets excise-cut and that it is priced competitively. Secondly, it has got abundance of space inside, making it the roomiest hatchback in the market today. Thirdly, it has got a responsive engine that offers good fuel economy for its size.
I have driven the Chevrolet U-VA and it seems the perfect car for you. It looks very wide and has the longest wheelbase of all the hatchbacks sold in india. It has a 1.2L engine which is not based on the Aveo's engine. This new engine has a stong responsiveness which is appreciated in city-driving. It makes you think that the engine has more power than what it produces. However the engine lacks really strong mid-range and high-speed performance. It is only on the highway-at high speed overtaking- that you feel the lack of power. Handling is balanced while ride quality is commendable. Feels like a large car, much like the Aveo. And it must also be noted that the gearshift quailty has improved over the Aveo. It is a great car to drive over long distances. But let me tell you, the boot space is severely limited due to intrusion of suspension struts but not too much of a concern, if you consider the other virtues of the car.
Coming to the interiors, there is abudant space. The front seats are very supportive but the rear seats are a bit hard. There is immense legroom. Infact, this is the largest hatch-back,even larger than the Getz. You sit taller and feel that the cabin has a large glass area. The qualiy of plastics are better than in the Getz but are boringly grey. But the execution is excellent, with a circular theme carried all over.
Maintanance should be easy on the pocket as with most GM vehicles. Now to the comparison part, the swift is very small for a five seater. I dont comment about the Indica and Palio as they dont seem to be in your choice. The Getz is the best choice as a family car in your list if you dont like the Chevrolet. If then, go ahead with the Getz, it is great looking, easy to drive and hassle-free to own. But let me warn you, a face-lifted Getz with major changes to the front end is on its way in 2007.

See. it totally depends on the purpose for the car. If you are young then the swift, getz prime, santro, spark are all good cars. However the new indica xeta 1.2 is supposed to be good value for money. But since you want to shell nearly 5 lakhs and not save then i would suggest you go for the wagonR or getz prime. The alto and spark deliver good mileage. If you are in a metro city then go for a small car like the santro, alto or spark. otherwise the other cars are fine.

Chevrolet Spark --shoud be launched soon n its a good choice...
other option would be
the Maruti Swift .
If u can wait then.......
Fiat Grande Punto
-- would be launched late next year. this car would be priced above 5lacs( I think ..) and it would be the biggest hatchback in our country . It will also hv technical adv over its compititors n come with a engeneering depth that would be a benchmark in the seg.
