At 4 weeks, the puppies should be getting fed dry puppy food moistened with warm water twice a day. They also need fresh water offered to them several times a day. Most moms will have them completely weaned around 6 weeks at which time they need to be fed 3 times a day with fresh water always available.

If your female comes into heat every 6 months, then she'll obviously be in heat again 4 months after she's had puppies. Time to get her spayed when she's weaned these.

The mother will wean the pups at her own time. I have had females that weaned at five weeks completely and others that continued till seven. I start offering dry food that has been soaked with water to the pups at four weeks. The female can go back in to heat at any time. Keep a close eye on her and get her a vet check one week after whelping.

I also agree with St. Lady, but as for the heat cycle I found my females coming in heat a month later then they should after having puppies. In my case mine come into heat 7 months after having puppies. I let them nurse as long as the mommy lets them. Not only does it dry up her milk it helps make her nipples go back into shape.

if they were left on their own she would feed them for a lot longer than we think.. months even...
you should spay her before she comes into heat again.. every heat cycle increases a females risk of developing some cancers...plus lets face it.. there are way too many pups being euthanized every day becuase of people allowing dogs to breed... every pup your dog has means somewhere another pup will have to die...

Dogs carry their pups for 63 days give or take. You should take your dog to the vet if you think she is going to have pups and ask him a lot of ? . You should never breed your dog with out a lot of searching 1st. If you never intended on breeding get her spayed . Always do research 1st before doing anything. They get off moms milk @ around 6weeks. They should be ready to go @ 8weeks.
