For example: Many claim to "know god personally". The common definition of "personally" would mean that you have met god, seen him and spoken with him (not figuratively but physically). I'm sure they have not done this. Why then do they not instead say something like "I feel like I know god because of my experience."

The reason this habit annoys me is that it confuses the issues being discussed. When you use uncommon definitions, people outside of your ideological framework don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Malcolms-ex: Thank you for making my point. You said:
"The Bible is the Mind of Christ. When you get to know someones mind don't you think that is personal? Christians pray. God answers."
You used two examples it that quote. The common definition of "mind" does not include books. The common definition of "answer" would mean verbal or written communication, not magically implanting some feeling in your mind.

The same reason many professions use uncommon definitions of words. It's a language construct referred to as a jargon; words that the people who practice something understand, while those on the outside do not. That said, using jargon with outsiders tends to be a bad idea, as it simply confuses them further. (For example, at my job, we use U-boats. Anyone who didn't work there might assume we're discussing German submarines, when we just mean carts to carry merchandise.)

The Bible is the Mind of Christ. When you get to know someones mind don't you think that is personal? Christians pray. God answers. I believe that is pretty personal. I have impersonal love for all mankind. I love out of my character. This impersonal love does not depend on the object of my love being good or bad. It is very powerful. The Christian life is a supernatural way of life and demands a supernatural means of execution. The Bible states that "unbelievers" will think that the word of God is foolishness. Obviously that is the case here. You are missing out on great peace, happiness, contentment. Peace out.

Steve, why do you wish to pick at bones with people. This is the United States of America and if someone wants to say, I have a personal relationship with God or another higher power, its up to them. I imagine they DO FEEL they have met God in person and if that is figuratively speaking, its really not Steve's concern now is it.

As far as oneself is concerned: Personally, I don't mind.
As a person: I admire his skill but dislike him personally.

[edit] English
[edit] Adverb
personally
in a personal manner
I know God personally. How can you argue? I know Him spiritually, and what is more personal than spirituality? You obviously don't know Him. In my personal experience with knowing my God (having met Him, seeing Him, and speaking with Him) I know that He is beyond this Earth, and without faith in Him you are blinded by doubt. One day all knee's shall bow down before Him, and all tongues shall confess unto all creation that He is Lord. Yours and mine included.

Good thought. I guess it is hard to explain things and with a limited English language, we try our best. I will work on it though. Thanks for your thoughts.

Because, they know God personally. Just because it doesn't fit your definition of Know peronally, doesn't mean its not true. It's different with a God, you know? That is not so hard to understand. What is hard to understand, is why HE would want that with us humans.

Knowing God and having a personal relationship with him is real. Those who have not experienced it and those who believe that its not possible will never agree.

Interesting thought.
They use these phrases, as they are the phrases that have been brainwashed into their heads. Too many Christians pick up the rhetoric of their religion, and often do not know what they are talking about.
