I am a college student in nyc and my case is currently pending in immigration ( i dont have my permanent residency yet, ive lived here for 9-10 years).

Yes, you must have a SS# to get a driver's license. If you are not ordinarily resident in the US, you can get a Taxpayer Identification Number from the IRS. That looks like and acts like a SS# except you do not earn SS credits from employment unless you eventually become a permanent resident at which time any SS# earnings and taxes will be credited retroactively to your SS account.

It is one method to prove you are legal and paying into the system here. So yes, quite important. Some states will not allow a license to be issued unless you have either a social security card, or a letter stating you are exempt from SS requirements from SS Administration.

I don't recall if they asked me for my SS number, but I've been driving for a long time.

I do know that when I renewed, there were people getting licenses who couldn't even speak English and were green cards/work visas so I don't see why you can't get a driver's license.

I'd call the DMV or check their website and ask them for confirmation on that.

Yes. Once you submitt your numbers to the DMV, it automatically goes to the state.

depends on the state..go to DMV put in the state ,, ant the dmv will tell you. or call them and ask!!
