Men are entitiled to Paternity leave - bit like Maternity and I think it is a good idea that a man takes a couple of weeks or a career break to help child development

When you say holiday do you mean a leave from work?
I think that it is great if both parents can participate. Fathers especially, because the mother has had 9 months to bond with the baby during growth and now this is the oppotunity for the father to create the bond with their child.
In Canada (sorry I didn't notice where you were from), the parents have the opportunity to take a combined number of weeks to a max of 52, so each parent can take 26 weeks, either at the same time or back to back. I do say though the majority of the time is normally take by the women, there is an increase of men taking even a few weeks to be with their child.

Well the mother has to recover after the birth. Usually 6 weeks is given as maternity leave. Believe me you will want to stick around when your baby is born and want to watch over them and care for them. A mother has a touch and the baby can recognize the heart beat. A baby needs the mother there, they have been inside the womb and will need that close feeling. The father can take paternity leave. My husband took a 2 week holiday to help out with the baby and help be recover. It is nice having someone help you when you are recovering.

First of all, being pregnant and giving birth is not a holiday. The woman takes time off of work because her body has just been completely destroyed and her vaginal area is swollen and stitched and sore for weeks. She also has had serious hormonal changes happening and her breast become hard as rocks and ache like nothing you could possible imagine as a man. She also has very sleepless nights due to taking care of the baby so you can get your precious sleep and you call that a holiday and you think you somehow deserve one. Yes I think the man should take a "holiday" and while the woman is on her holiday you make sure to send her to some 5 star resort and you stay home and take care of the baby and you lose your sleep and your mind while she lets her body heal!

Parental leaves can be taken by both the mother or the father, and are paid or unpaid and voluntary or compulsory at different stages, depending on the country.
In Sweden, for example, they are paid quite early, from the last months of pregnancy for mother and since the child has been born for the father.
The Commission of the EU also made a recommendation to the European countries to extend their provisions on parental leaves.
Parental leaves should be voluntary, taken by the father or by the mother at their choice, except for the first weeks, when it should be shared by both, since the mother is irreplaceable.

Stay at home dads are a growing trend.
But studies have proven that babies need mothers in the first months of life. They develop the best and are the most healthy when mom is there, not just dad.
But, dad is very important.

Only if her employer and his allows the father to take over some of her parental leave (which is generally 4 months after the birth).

There is no reason why a man shouldnt take time off work to raise a child. It shouldnt always be left to the mother. It should be an equal responsabilty anyway.

Well, I think so. In fact, they've done studies and where the father DID, they found that the babies of those fathers were statistically less likely to grow up to commit a crime/be violent as long as the father wasn't setting a bad example than those where he didn't. (I'd have thought that would have gone without saying but...) So...yeh...go for it!

my husband took off a short period of time from work to be with me and the baby.
it's harder for a dad to stay home immediately if mom is nursing the baby.
also, mom will most likely be sore and is usually leaking all kinds of icky stuff after birth for about 6 weeks. not fun!
i'm all in favor of dads pitching in.sometimes if my husband gets off work early he will pick up our son from daycare. then when i get home they are playing together. it's nice!
take care:)
