It's not just a matter of safety. They have the numbers already. The head of the Ontario athletic commitee wants MMA to be established as an amature sport first. And as of late there have been no organizations stepping up to start any amature tournaments with amature rules... Look at boxing. as an amature sport head gear and larger gloves are worn. In Amature MMA although wearing a helmet would not be ideal the gloves might be bigger and the rules would change to incorperate things like wrestling shoes or pads on feet for kicking and maybe even shin pads like the ones used in kick boxing... Until this is inplace they are not willing to alow pro fights. There is a line up a mile long of people who want to host events and charge entry and some will even pay the fighters a bit but if only one out of 1000 or less martial artists has experience with full contact fighting or MMA how can you host a guy like Mark Hominick to fight a guy whos only competition is Judo or Wrestling or Muay Thai with heavy gloves and pads...

The Oneida can hold this event as they are on sovereign land that is exempt from some Canadian Law. MMA is still deemed to be too violent and dangerous, therefore it is still illegal. I never understood the popularity of watching two guys in a cage beating the snot out of each other, but, to each his own.
