I have noticed that in many typed text instances where God is mentioned I often see it typed out as G-D. What is the purpose of this? Does typing out GOD as G-D keep people from being offended or what? And those who would get offended, would they not know G-D was GOD anyway?

Some religions such as Jewish refuse to write "God" because the word is sacred, if you write god then you have to save the paper you wrote it on forever. they avoid writing it casually also because someone could deface it and they believe it is wrong to obliterate or deface the name of god.

It is a matter of respect to G-d. His name is so holy, it is never spoken or written. Example: The Ashkenazim Orthodox Jews use the the word Hashim, in place of the word G-d.

They confuse the title God with the beings name. They are trying not to take it's name in vain. It shows how deep their understanding of their own religious beliefs are.
