First off, congratulations on losing the weight. To answer your questions: Weight loss is a big deal because being even 15 to 20 pounds overweight increases your risks for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, the list goes on and on. Of course, there's also the outward appearance issue that is fueled by the fashion industry and Hollywood, so many people believe that they're somehow "bad" or "unworthy" if they're not in shape. So there's one good reason to lose weight and another not-very-good-at-all reason.
You're right -- If you want to lose the weight and keep it off you have to make permanent changes. From your post, it seems that you have done exactly that, and good on you for it. The only thing I take issue with is the way you did it. A starvation diet is not only very dangerous it can have many very nasty effects. Most people who go on starvation diets lose some fat, but lose mostly water and muscle. Starvation diets also mess with your metabolism, and that's especially dangerous with teenagers because it can cause anorexia. Finally, starvation diets can actually slow your metabolism down permanently, which means a person who lost the weight on a starvation diet would still have to eat less than a person of the same height and weight who lost the weight slowly and safely in order to maintain that weight.
The key thing with diet plans, exercise regimens, and weight loss that is stressed by so many dieticians and trainers is that you lose the weight SAFELY. No one puts on an extra 30 pounds overnight, so you shouldn't expect it to come off overnight either. You're 100% dead-on-target when you say there is no miracle cure and what weight loss REALLY requires is discipline. Having said that, however, discipline can be applied in the wrong way. You cut your caloric intake to an unsafe level, and that required discipline. People who try to lose weight safely are also exercising discipline in the form of patience -- they realize it'll take them longer to lose the weight by trying to drop two pounds a week but they also realize they're not taking any health risks and the results will be just as permanent as yours.
BOTTOM LINE: You have a very good message about using self-control to lose weight instead of trying the latest diet pill or fad eating program. Just don't encourage people to starve themselves in order to lose the weight. The end does NOT justify the means.

I think the reason people 'fuss' is because of the skeletal thin shape that's a trend in magazines. Going on a starvation diet does not work because you eat again at some point and the body stores all of it to keep some back for when you next go on a 'diet'.
Plus I think we need to be eating food, not a diet. It's all about balance.

People fuss because their doctors tell them they're going to die from high blood pressure or clogged arteries or diabetes. I have diabetes and I watch what I eat and exercise but I don't try to get down to what they want me to because I like to eat too much. My diabetes is controlled without insulin so I do pretty good. People fuss because they want to look like Madonna and Britney Spears but they don't have the personal trainers or drugs these celebrities do. People fuss because we have told women that "pretty" is 70 lbs. I forget the conversion rate for stones. Also, when people say the diet doesn't work for them, they fail to realize they have to work the diet. Food is just too convenient here in America.

It is difficult to change your habits if you have compromises with people, work to do that causes stress and anguish, and so, leads to overeating, and, most importantly, if you just don't want to stop eating because you like it so much.
