Cabbage, Black eyed peas, corn bread and ????

I think we have it now, thanks to Black Bear, who nailed it best. Corn beef and Cabbage from Lisa M. Collard Greens from B and Cmytoes. Smashed potatoes and Applesauce from Mom of 2 and Blackeyed peas and rice from cmytoes. And for dessert (two ss LPN). ...Banana Pudding and/or Peach Cobbler rings a bell with Cmytoes as well.

Being as I gave up red meat and pork for health and religious reasons, I'll side with Mom for 2 and go with chicken: baked.

Don't have a clue as to what red-eyed gravy is??

And thanks to LPN - I'm straight now on going out to dine, unless I'm traveling by train, in which case I hit the diner car for dinner. Not traveling, however, I might dine out in a private dining room for dinner, or just slum it and go to the nearby dinette/cafe for something to tide me over.

One last note for "B" - God grants blessings, Satan grants luck. Don't give me anything connected to luck, thank you very much. Nuff said. Thanks one and all. Now off to the store.

In SC the traditional New Year's dinner is a baked ham, hoppin' john (a combination of black-eyed peas and rice) [good luck in the New Year], collard greens [money in the New Year], red-eye gravy, and corn bread ['cause it's tasty.] I follow up with a southern dessert like banana pudding or peach cobbler.

I'm from South Carolina and for us, the traditional includes Pork, Black-eyed peas and collard greens. The Black-eyed peas represent luck in the new year and the collard greens money. I love all of these things, so New Years is a good eating day for me.

We have blackeyed peas and rice with smoked sausage in it, cornbread, and collard greens. There is also a dime in the pot of beans for luck. And the greens are for money. It doesnt work though cuz Ive eaten about 400 lbs of greens in my life and I'm still a broke a s s . lol.

That sounds like a southern American menu, I would serve all of those side dishes with ham, or maybe fried chicken. I grew up in Pennsylvania, and a traditional Amish New Year's Day menu is roast pork with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and applesauce. Really good combination!

Generally, you have listed it, in America, except you left out the pork. That can be ham, or ham hocks, or a nice pork roast. But generally, you want some pork with the black eyed peas and corn bread.

The black eyed peas (Hoppin' John) is the only tradition I ever heard of. People are sick of food after a month of gorging themselves.
