A friend of mine would like the following Dave Matthews Band lyrics translated into French for a tattoo: "Then I look up at the sky." I've come up with either "Puis je regarde le ciel" or "Alors je leve mes yeux vers le ciel" (with an accent grave over the first "e" in "leve"). Does anyone have an idea of which one might be more appropriate, or whether there are any grammatical errors in either of these translations? Or, if you have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it! Also, would you go with "puis" or "alors"? This is permanent, after all, and I wouldn't want her to have an erroneous tattoo! Thanks!

The problem with the sentence "Then I look up at the sky" is that we don't have the context. That is, if the lyrics said, first I did this, and this and "Then I look up at the sky", I'd say 'ensuite je regarde le ciel'. If there's no list context, then I'd probably use puis. For me, alors would be more like "well".

Hey, for something as permanent as a tattoo, get face to face with a real native French person and then check it out with two or three others.

Please find a real live French speaker. You don't want to use online translation programs for a tattoo. If you live near a university, I would try asking someone in their language department. My language professors would have been happy to help.
