i have a shitzhu there is nothing wrong with it's diet and it is treated nice every single day, but recently he has started to get mardy. He is not an old dog, but he growls if you stroke him, talk to him or even look at him. He never used to be like this and there is no reason for him to have turned this way. Dog schools are out of the question, so what can i do at home?

Lhasas and shihtzus are similar in this attitude they have. It is a personality trait of the breed and with everything being so overbred the worse usually shines through the most.

I just back off mine but when he want to come to me I push him away. It has worked. They are smart little critters and remember well. Lhasa and shihs both hold grudges if you do anything to upset them.

My Shih Tzu loves everyone and when she acted like this when she was just a puppy we found out she had a sticker from some bush in her paw. Most likely something is hurting your dog and making it not want you to touch it or making it painful to be picked up. Your best bet would be to take it to the vet and see if maybe it has an infection, burr or other thorn in it somewhere or maybe a pulled muscle or something. If you are afraid it will bite, try covering it's head with a towel and then picking it up. It is very hard to muzzle a shih tzu because of their short snouts and you don't want to cause it more pain if possible.

Just because it is not an old dog doesn't mean it cant be suffering from some sort of physical pain. If this is a new development in its behavior first you must rule out illness. Then if the dogs health is cleared you must do some behavior training.

Why are dog schools out of the question? You and your dog would benefit.

First, have him checked by the vet for a physical problem.

If nothing physical is wrong, he's SPOILED.

Maybe cause you spelled his name wrong.. I do wish people who have Shih Tzu would learn to spell it .. S H I H - T Z U ....I raise Shih Tzu's. Your dog is trying to tell you something. Your best bet would take him to the vet and have him check out. Dogs can't speak in human language so they tell you in their own. I know my dogs and by their actions I know when something is not right.

JR you are so wrong with your answer. So wrong.
