They make little magnets that you mount at the top of the door that make a loud beeping noise when the door is opened. This should wake you and keep him from going downstairs. You can get them for around $15...here is a link to show you what they look like, it's the Wireless Door/Window Contact Alarm...scroll down a bit to find it.

I think spanking is totally wrong especially for this situation! He's 2.5 yrs old he's too little to keep in one place for too long. My son is 3 and when he wakes up and wants to go down stairs i have to get up with him, it's all part of being a parent. You can't keep him in his room so you can sleep. Try going down stairs with him in the morning and getting some more rest on the couch if you really need it, that way he gets what he wants and so do you.

I would start by looking at tall gates. Summer extra tall walk through gates fit any door and stairwell opening. They are pressure mounted so you do not need to attach to the walls. they retail for approx $70.00 at jcpenny on-line. I have one upstairs for my 20 month old and 2 that I connected together for my double wide stairwell that leads not only upstairs but then down to the basement. I can easily go in and out as I have the strength to lift and pull at the same time, but the height makes it so my daughter cannot crawl over it. After that there is just getting up and staing on the lower level with your child...I have seen the sun rise plenty of mornings with this child and with the ones before her.

My friend had the same problem. She has a screen door (with mostly wood slats on the bottom half) made and installed on the bedroom door. It was locked from the hallway in two places. The child could not get out, but because it is a screen door, the child could be heard from the parents room if there was a problem.
They decorated it. It was nice. This is less expensive than a "dutch door."

What about a gate for his door, and a gate for the stairs? We have a really tall gate our son couldn't get over- it's also long, so we can attach it so it blocks off our dining room/kitchen.... maybe try one of those? It's really big and sturdy.

Do you have a child safety gate at the top and bottom of the stairs? There are many options available, some actually attch to the wall and can be opened with one hand. You would have to find one that required an adult to open so that he doesn't figure out how to open it himself.

I would put some kind of alarm to let you know that he is out of his room. If that is not an option I would try putting up a door at the stairs with a lock up high.

I turned the doorknob around and locked my son in until he was alseep and then unlocked it. He usually stays in his room through out the night. Every once in a while he does get up around 4 A.M. for some reason, but for the most part this has worked very well.

This is a hard one because on one hand you dont really want to lock him in his room, on the other hand he can get into soo much stuff and could get hurt. I think the screen door idea is really good. You can hear the child but he cant get out on his own. I have read many Moms ideas on this one but the screen door is the best idea I have heard.
