You can calm a busy picture with lots of diagonals in it with stable verticals or calm horizontals; you can add energy to a predominantly horizontal or vertical picture by adding diagonals.

The closest description to adding movement in paintings is a technique of using vivid broken color strokes...the best way to desribe it. These types of pieces are referred to as "action paintings" A couple of artists that use this technique are Peter Max and JoAnn DePolo. movement........what a funny word.... i have no idea what it means..... but i suggest painting untill it evokes an emotion in you.... the more powerful emotion the more movement,,,,,lol......
