I have a friend that I've talked to for some time over msn. He lives in a separate state to me, so we're restricted to talking on here. in the past few months, he's been having a rough time of things, his Dad left home and his life at home is sufferring because of it. His best and only friend at school recently died of cancer, and I he's still grieving deeply over that. Lately I've noticed he's been acting listeless and depressed while I talk to him. He is having trouble at school and at home, and he feels like he has no one apart from me to turn to. I've suggested as many ways he could improve his life as I could, such as talking with his mother, moving schools, trying to work things out with all of the friends he has lost this year, but all of his attempts failed. he is now talking quite often about suicide, and I know he has started slitting his wrists. I don't know how I can help him, as I know no one that he knows, and he won't tell me a thing!

That's a tough one. try to be very supportive of this person and be there whenever he needs to talk! try to get his phone number and talk to him this is more personal then chatting online and it might help him a little more. if you call him and his mom should answer maybe you can have a discreet chat with her and lightly explain whats going on. but be careful he might think you are betraying him by doing that.we know you aren't but someone in his state of mind might feel that way. if he is a true friend of yours explain to him that if he ever killed himself he would be leaving all those that love him behind to feel the same pain hes feeling and ask him if that's what he really wants? sometimes when people look at things differently they have a change of mind. also let your friend know that if he were gone how it would affect you and all the people around, make him feel wanted and make him feel important to you at least!! good luck. i hope this all turns out well.

Since you probably don't have a contact number of any kind and
are only in communication over the Internet,I would say all you
can do is continue to give support. Advise him to go into therapy,
or at least talk to a friend or family member face to face. Sometimes that helps.

If what you said about your freind already startting to slit his wrist is true.. then the matter is very delicate.. the person need simmediate psychiatric help..
this is what could be done in this particular condition
1.talk ot him.. be there for him.. try to get his phone number
2.from phone number try to find out his location(if land line) and inform the police closest to that place.. Suicide for your information is a criminal offence.. explianh the situation
3.the police can take him to the nearest psychiatrist
good luck

If you have his family's contact info - YOU need to contact his mother or immediate family... immediately. You're not betraying him by going behind his back. He wants someone to step in - even if he doesn't know it yet. Tell his mother. Get him some help.

Urge him to get into serious therapy right away. He is suffering from deep depression and only counseling and medication can help him.
