Why does a house of God need money?

Why does God need money? If there was a God, wouldn't he just provide everything the church worshiping him everything it needed?

Are we obligated to tithe?



Email: What, specifically, does the Bible teach about tithing as it pertains to present day. My wife and I have longed tithed, etc. Regardless of the answer to this question, we will not quit tithing. We give as we purpose in our hearts. We are just curious about what the biblical answer is for today.

Response: There is no New Testament admonition to pay tithes. The reason is because we are not under law; that is, we don't "have to" pay tithes. However, Jesus taught us to love God and to love our neighbor. If we do this then tithing, it would seem, would be a natural response in the freedom that we have been Christ rather than a requirement of Law. Why? Because the tithe that we give to the church can be used for furthering the gospel, the presentation of Christian literature, support of missionaries, and, of course, pastors. Regarding the latter, let's take a look at what it says in 1 Cor. 9:3-10,

"My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we not have a right to eat and drink? 5 Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or do only Barnabas and I not have a right to refrain from working? 7 Who at any time serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat the fruit of it? Or who tends a flock and does not use the milk of the flock? 8 I am not speaking these things according to human judgment, am I? Or does not the Law also say these things? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing.” God is not concerned about oxen, is He? 10 Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, for our sake it was written, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops."

Paul is teaching us here that those who work at something have the right to make a living from it. This is a basic and simple principle that is found in the scriptures. In 1 Tim. 5:18, Paul says, "For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,” and “The laborer is worthy of his wages."
Clearly those who work in the ministry are allowed to make a living from the ministry. How can they do this if they are not supported by tithes from the very congregation that the feed? This becomes more obvious when we realize that ministers often work more than 40 hours a week and are usually on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Therefore, it seems fair to say that tithing is, more or less, expected in the New Testament but we would not say that any Christian is under obligation to tithe. It should be done out of the kindness and generosity of the heart as an act of worship before God.
Finally, Abraham paid tithes before the Law of Moses was ever instituted.

It is necessary for each group of Christians that worship to give as they have been prospered. This is a portion of their earnings. GOD provides each of us what we need and we, in turn, give back to HIM accordingly. The CHURCH has expenses to carry on HIS WORK. We must decide how to do that and use the money accordingly. WHY do non-Christians not understand this concept? I hope that this makes some sense. Have a great day!

Oh ugh hon, this is a ridiculous question, of course God doesn't need the money, but we do! We have to pay for the building, the pastor, the hymn books, the electricity.

And God DOES provide everything, through the tithes of the church members. Were you expecting Him to rain down money every Sunday morning?

God don't need money, But God does understand that a church has bills to pay, That is where your tithes & offerings comes in at, & yes I pay my tithes, In fact my church has never pass the offering plate one time, Why, Because our members pay their tithes, & my pastor has been around this world 4 times preaching, All we have in church is a little hole in the wall for people to put their tithes in. How do I know they don't pass the offering plate, because I have been going there since 1974

Of course they do, because a church serves as the focus of a religious community, with needs for electricity, plumbing, and staff.

The larger question is, why does a house of God need things such as gymnasiums and ping pong tables and recreation rooms? I'm very suspicious of megachurches that put their money into such things rather than guiding it to where there's true need in the world.

Churches use the money for many GOOD reasons, like helping others, spreading the word, etc. My son's church was able to present a newly-built house to a homeless family last week, 2 days before Christmas.

Well, God isn't going to drop a bucketful of money from the sky! He doesn't work that way. The money from the congregation is how God provides for them, because God moves those people to give.

It is not that God needs money. The church requires funds to operate just like any home does. There are electric bills, gas bills, donations given to the poor. All these things require funding.

He does provide it what it needs through tithes and offerings. Bills have to be paid in order to have electricity and heat. Money has to be spent to provide places to sit and books to read and hymnals to sing from. Maintenance of God's house cost mney just like maintenance on your own.

This world demands money for rent. electricity, water, sewer, and trash pick up. Everything in this world runs on money from the best to the worst.
