On top of the usual Disneyland, Legoland, Sea World theme parks, I'd recommend going to Hollywood and Highland. There's a big center where there are great restaurants and shops...and cheap parking, too. Right out front, you can look at the Stars on the Walk of Fame...very Hollywood.

You can also try going to the Grove/Farmer's Market in Beverly Hills. It's a great outdoor farmer's market that is connected to the Grove. The Grove has good restaurants and pretty good shopping. If one of your kids is a girl, you could have lunch at American Girl Place and shop there. Also, Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica is fun. You'll probably run into a celebrity there so keep your eyes peeled!

If your kids are more into seeing nature/beaches/museums, there are some great hikes in Malibu...but I think the prettiest beaches are in Orange County. Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach are great places to see CA beaches. You could take Pacific Coast Highway from LA to OC and stop along the way at an oceanfront restaurant..it might be too cold to go to the beach. Also, the Getty Center and Griffith Park are great stops, too.

Have fun!

There is lots to do in LA, however since you mentioned a 4 and 6 year old....definately the best place is Disneyland! That is if you don't mind spending a little mroe money (tickets are not cheap). El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood is great for kids. On Saturdays they offer shows before or after a movie screening-depending on the movie. For example, if its a princess movie, they might have tea with a princess (real character) after the show. I took my class once to see Brother Bear, and various Disney characters came on stage to perform before the movie. The kids loved it. April is cool and windy weather, but in LA, that's not bad. Other places to go are Legoland and Universal Studios. Universal Studios offeres you a citywalk too...there you can find nice restaurants, movie theatres, shops, and gift shops. My kids love going there. We live in LA but don't go there often, and when we do, its a treat. My kids have fun simply playing outside Universal Studios in the water sprouts found just outside the city walk. Check out the LA calendar online, they sometimes ost events months ahead of time, so you can check out what is available during the week your in LA.

April in LA has some pretty good drive by shootings. The traffic jams can be pretty entertaining also.

visit the La Brea tar pits. A great look at pre-historic L.A. and a great place to picnic.
