I think I'd prefer the second - dissolving into the universe and been nothing and one with everything at the same time

People do tend to see Nirvana as extinction but that's because Buddhism describes Nirvana in terms of what it's not. This is because of the difficulty of describing it in terms of what it is.
The evidence is, though, that Nirvana is very full and ecstatic. It is only at death, (Parinirvana), that 'the drop falls back into the ocean' and the round of rebirth, suffering and death is extinguished for ever.
There is another side to Buddhism in which one who has reached the possibility of Parinirvana resolves instead to return in order to help all suffering beings.
Such people are called Boddhisattvas and their vow is called the Boddhisattva vow. I think that's probably the highest calling there can be.
But I'm biased.

I'd have to agree with you and choose the second. If those were my only options, that is. Existance with no greater purpose is boring. A non-existance as part of the ever changing yet ever the same universe is at least intriguing.

Personally, I'm too in love with this world and life here to only be satisfied with one short lifetime. I hope reincarnation is real. Even 100 years is not enough time to learn and experience everything I want. (Then again, the enlightenment that comes with Nirvana is akin to learning everything the universe has to teach...)

I don't have a set 'religion', I have faith in what makes sense to me. I believe in reincarnation, which would be closer to nirvana than a christian heaven, so if I had to make a choice between those two it would be nirvana.

I gotta go with Nirvana. Eternal life just seems burdensome. More of the same, even if without death or taxes.
