how do you re-book an airline ticket over the internet

If you booked it online on a site like expedia it is very complicated. The online sites make changing reservations very difficult.

You should go directly to the website of your airline and see if it gives you the option to change your reservation on their website. If not, call the airline direct and have them change your reservation. Most airlines are trying to charge like 10$ extra fee to change reservations over the phone, but if there is no other way for you to do it they will probably waive the fee.

You CANNOT change your flight arrangements on line. You have to contact whomever you purchased the ticket from. If it was a Travel Agent, call them. If you booked directly with the airline, contact them. If it was an online agencies like Expedia, or Orbitz - contact them.

Sometimes the online agencies are useless because they don't know how to change the itinerary or offer alternatives. If they ask you to contact the airline directly this is NOT CORRECT INFORMATION. You have a legal contract with the online agency, they have to help you. You chose to give them your business, so if they screw you over in the end, its between you and them, and the airline is not involved.

The airline can only take over responsibility of your reservation after you've flown your first international segment.

Also, the airline doesn't get the money for your ticket until approx. 30 days after you've completed your travel.

If you booked it with the airline online call them. They will be able to help you. If you booked it with Travelocity or Expedia call their customer service line. They do have live agents you can assist you. Be sure to do it before the first flight departs or you will lose the value of the ticket.

Did you buy it online?
In some cases, you may not be able to change your itinerary online, if you bought your ticket thru a third party other than a travel agency...let's say Orbitz or travelocity.... you may have to call the third party's number or directly to the carrier, but you will NOT be able to do it online.
