I have a pit bull (ok, stop shaking your head now) and he is a runt. He is almost a year old and won't get much bigger than he is now. My husband and I have taken VERY good care of him. He is smart, SWEET, house trained, and very gentle with children and anyone else he sees. We did not train him to be an attack dog. He won't even bark is a stranger comes to the house. That being said - here is the sad news (No, he didn't turn):::
My husband and I both are being transferred to Rankin County, MS, which has a ban on pit bulls and rott weilers (not to mention we are moving into an apartment complex). We have no one to give our baby to, and no one that is interested in having him wants him for the right reasons. We love our dog very much, and do not want to get rid of him, but we have no choice.
HELP!!! I don't know what to do!! I do not want him to rot in an animal shelter!!

That is a link to Pit Bull Rescue Central. The best source for you in this difficult time. Please be careful about dropping him off at a shelter. Some shelters will outright not adopt out pit bulls and even if they do, and because of his breed, your dog may not look as appealing as some of the other dogs there. The shelters are currently experiencing a flood of animals. The "Christmas Presents Gone Bad", if you will. Good luck and please check out this rescue site. I think it is your best chance. It may be a lengthy drive to the nearest rescue, but it will be worth it to know your baby is in capable hands. They know what they are doing. Best of luck honey, and I am sorry for your situation.

Oh my god I am so sorry to here this. I have a dog of my own and I would be devastated if something like this happened. How about family? Ask a family member to take care of him. then you can maybe visit once in a while. Or you can move to a place near by Rankin County, MS that did not ban pit-bulls and rent a house and drive to work (although that might be really hard). I really wish I could help you more. I am so sad to hear this. Good luck.

Oh no, how awful. I'm not really a dog person but I do think it's dreadful the way pit bulls are given such bad press because of a few irresponsible owners. Have you tried telling everybody he's a staff? most people can't tell the difference anyway.
Have you contacted the local humane society? Or maybe there is a pit bull rescue centre somewhere who could help you. You can't be the only person with the sense to realise that it's not the dogs but the owners that causes the problem.
Good luck.

First off, don't put an ad in the newspaper. You'll end up disconnecting your phone with all the idiots calling you.
I would do a search for local mixed breed or pitbull/Am Staff rescues in your area. Tell them your situation and see if they can help. Call your local kennel club. If a local rescue can't take the dog, ask for a courtesy listing on petfinders or their own adoption page.
Personally, I wouldn't move to a place where I can't take my dogs. But I do realize that sometimes it's unavoidable. See if there is a chance that you can locate houseing outside the ban area first. If family members are unwilling to help, do you have any friends in the area that might help foster the dog for the time being. Be sure to tell them that you will pay expenses and vet bills.

Try family and friends...if not check to see if you can get some type of waiver for the ban. I have heard of veterinarians that will hold a rott or a pit bull for about a week doing a test to see where they stand at being dangerous. I am in Italy and I know that if I were to move to Germany they would have to do that. I would contact the local Vet or even (maybe) the SPCA.

Wow, that's a tough one.
First off, good for you for adopting a pit and raising it in a loving home. I applaud you.
Second, there are many, many dedicated and wonderful shelters and rescue organizations out there, and of those, many that are devoted to pits and other 'banned' breeds. There are lots of other people in your situation--Denver, CO also has a pit ban--and there are resources that can help.
I myself do not agree with the 'ban the breed' legislation; I think resources would be better allocated to getting the criminal element that abuses these animals off the street and away from animal shelters. My advice: Google "ban the breed" and the location where you are from. I just did a quick one and over 100,000 results came up--some of them articles on how to get around the law.
I empathize with you--the thought of giving up your baby is excruciating. Good luck to you! Have a safe and wonderful New Year!

I had a friend with the same problem last year. They contacted the local Humane Society and was able to find a good home for their dog. Other avenues you can look at include putting up ads at the local supermarket or asking friends if they or someone they know would like the dog. Try people at work, too. They may not want the dog, but they may know someone who does. The more people you talk to the better the chance you'll find someone. Good Luck!

That's really a hard one. I couldn't even imagine getting rid of my dogs. This is so sad. The only thing I can suggest to you is contact a pit rescue group. They will do their best to properly screen the new perspective owners so this dog would not be used for bait at training another vicious fighter pit. I hope and pray your dog fins a wonderful, loving home!!!! Good luck!!!

I'LL TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL I have a pt myself, and he's just as much a baby as yours is! I've got mine spoiled. But not to the point where he thinks he is over my kids!
Anyways, try putting an ad in the local newspaper, a statewide trader, putting up posters, and the internet. The internet alone has more sites then any newspaper could print the ads, or anything else. It has many many sites, especially for pits too.
The link below should help you out. That's a pit bull site. If you can't find anyone to take him by the time you move, send me a message, and I'll take him in!

Do NOT take him to a shelter. The idiots there will euthanize him immediately, without even so much as a simple temperament evaluation, because he is "vicious"(I know, they're uneducated "breedist"who believe untrue media hype)
As much as I believe lying is wrong, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Either say he is a mastiff/ boxer mix (or some other "bully breed mix) or just don't register him. You should also find a pet friendly apartment
