You need to put everything into pushing as if you're having a bowel movement. I know it sounds gross (and it is) but it's true. I had my epidural and the best anesthesiologist. He let me keep the epidural through pushing and I LOVED him for it! Not all doc will allow this, though. You have to show that you can push despite the loss of feeling down there. I just put all my mental power into it and it worked. Everyone is different. You may push for a couple of hours. You may push for a few minutes. I pushed for 40 minutes. Not bad for a first baby. It feels like crap (literally). It is NOT fun. It's the most difficult part IMO. Just get yourself to the point where you want the baby out and your mind will take over. Just don't give up! Don't let anything discourage you. You'll be fine.

It just comes natural. Your body "tells" you it's time to push. You feel the uncontrolable urge to bear down. I guess if I had to describe it, It's like being constipated and trying to push it out. Except your legs are spread apart and in the air! Was that a bad analogy? Sorry!!

if you haven't had the epidural, your body automatically gives you the urge to push, you will feel it pushing with you, helping you ,without an epidural it will hurt like hell, when the babys head is crowning,it will feel like you are splitting up the middle, with an epidural you will feel it,but it won't hurt and they will have to tell you when to push because you can't feel it,every woman is a little different, but basically the pain will be quite bad unless your lucky and have it quickly, you tend to forget the pain once the baby comes!
goodluck!

Believe me, you will know how and when to push. I had no control over it. I mean the urge was there. I would just relax and do what the dr.s tell you to do. You will do fine. I've heard that walking before delivery helps. Good luck.

You will know because of the pressure you will feel in your bottom. It's similar to bearing down to have a bowel movement, but it's using the muscles in your perinem instead of your spincter muscles. If you seem to have trouble figuring it out, have your caregiver put his/her hand there for you to push against at first. That will help you figure out how to focus your efforts.

It will be a natural instinct and you will KNOW when it's time, the hardest part will be trying not to push.. Kinda feels like having to use the toilet. Trust me your body will take over and you will just do it.

You push like you are going to the bathroom.
