Either of the following books by Dr. Bernie Siegel are absolutely great for cancer patients AND their families. My favorite is the first one.

- Love, Medicine and Miracles
- Peace, Love and Healing

If I Get to Five : What Children Can Teach Us about Courage and Character, by Fred Epstein and Josh Horwitz is an excellent book.

Epstein is a pediatric neurosurgeon who recently had a near-fatal bicycle accident. He draws upon examples of his child patients to address questions of fear and courage. The book's title comes from a four-year-old with a brain tumor. Though she seemed to understand the seriousness of her situation, she made plans: "If I get to five, I'm going to jump rope-backward!" etc.

Brief quote from editorial review: "Epstein and Horwitz handle topics such as hope and spiritual awareness gracefully, without being preachy, and the book should serve as an important tool for families or individuals coping with grave illnesses."

Depending on personal beliefs and outlook, there is some variability in what's helpful, but Grace and Grit by Ken Wilber is one of my favorites.

I received the Lance Armstrong book when I was diagnosed. I really enjoyed, but I can't remember the name of it.
