If you can spare some money i prefer the electronic ear thermometer, you just put in the child's ear for 2 seconds & bingo you get the temperature, it is easy & fast, & they don't have to sit still for a long time.

I've just started doing under the arm with a digital thermometer with my 19 month old. I was nervous about if it would be accurate, so the first few times, I took the digital and then the rectal too and compared. I find it to be very accurate, but a lot of people advise adding 1-3 degrees for an underarm measurement.

My son doesn't particularly like it, but I let him do something he likes while we are taking his temp to help. (He gets to pick a video or a book... I don't like him watching a lot of tv, but that does work well to help him hold still. With the book, he tends to move his arm to turn pages.)

I also let him take his favorite teddy bears temperature when we are done (with the underarm... not the rectal obviously!!!) which really helps.

Good luck!

most medical personnel will reccommend rectal, b/c it is most accurate. however, a squirmy 2 year old may not have that, so i would reccommend getting one that is quick for the ear or even the temple. i saw one at wal-mart that looked really nice that you swipe across the forehead and it takes a whole bunch of readings in a seconds and averages them out into the final reading. it was a tad pricey, though...but i'd get it if my kid was older.

take care.!

Rectal is the most accurate, but if he wont let you take it under the arm then there is the ear method and i also seen one that you just touch to the head, but that one cost about 35 dollars at walmart.

I always preffered to take it under the arm on my kidsd. I worried about the theremomwter up the butt because if they do not hold still you can damage them. Under the arm add 1 degree it is as good as any other way. Best of luck.

armpit is easiet but not accurate
rectal thermometers are easiet and more accurate
i always used them on my kids
lie them down as if your changing their diaper and put some vaseline on the tip of the thermometer slowly insert it into the babys rectum but not more than an inch.
it does not hurt but your child may be a little uncomfortable and fussy.
wait two minutes then take it out and check
hope it works

I like the ear thermometers. I finally got one as a gift, and it's really easy. My daughter is more likely to sit still with that, because she thinks it's cool, as compared to doing it any other way. And it's quicker too.

Under the arm or in the ear.. people underestimate how strong a 2year old can be.

Rectal of course is the most accurate but UGGHHHH. I use the ear themometer it is the best. AND QUICK. If you call your Dr. they usually always ask where you took it and they can convert it.
