I would like to know why in the hell the over the counter hair color products say to put it on dry unwashed hair. No one can give me this answer and it sounds unreasonable. How is the color to get to the roots or strands of hair with even one day build up of gel, hairspray, atmosphere particles? Seems like a waste of money cause it will wash right off?

It is to be put on dry hair because it clings better... It WILL NOT wash right off... and it doesn't mean to put it on dry hair that has gobs of product in it either.. It means like wash your hair the night before then dye it the next night. The natural oil your hair makes to protect itself helps the developer work. I can assure you that it isn't going to wash out or off. That stuff is stout and it isn't going anywhere unless you do it wrong, like put water on your hair first.

I get my hair done at a salon, by a professional and that dye goes onto dry hair. Its kinda standard.

They don't mean dirty hair - they just mean not wet. If hair is washed then colour applied, the water will have a weakening affect on the colour. Hair needs to be completely dry before using, but it is perfectly possible to wash, dry and apply the colour all within the space of about an hour.

You're just not suppose to wash your hair, because your scalp has oil, that will protect your head while you color. As for hairspray or gel, dont use then, before you color, as your hair should be free of build-up.

You should wash your hair about 24 hours before you dye it, do not use any hair products whatsoever within those 24 hours, then brush hair well, right before dying it to spread the natural oils.
