Cradle cap is really something very different from eczema. If the problem is cradle cap, it can be cured by rubbing lots of olive oil into the hair and scalp and on the sides of his face where the rash is. Let it stay on for a few hours then you will be able to comb it out. Afterward wash his hair with a mild soap or shampoo. (This cure was handed down to me from my mother. I found a similar treatment on line.)

It sounds like your son has eczema. My sister-in-law also refers to it as "cradle cap." I have it, and what happens is I have patches both on my face and my scalp which get red, then develop white scaly patches. If I try to just pull the patches off, the hair comes with it. It's hereditary, so if other members of your family have eczema, it's especially possible that that is what your son has. I don't know if it's too strong for a 2 1/2 year old, but I use Selson Blue on mine on the scalp, and leave it on while I'm taking my shower. For the places on his skin, you might try Eucerin cream. It's very gentle, and keeps the area moist, which prevents the scaling. You can find it with the other moisturizers at about any store, including Wal-Mart.

I am not sure about scalp, but my son has eczema which I think yours may have. I tried all sorts of cream and the only one that works is Aveeno lotion. He also takes a bath with Aveeno soap. Best thing to do is ask the pharmacist. They know a whole lot more than doctors because they keep up to date with all the latest drugs.

This condition could be what is known as "Cradle Cap".....This condition comes from the milk dripping from the bottle down the babies face, or neck to the back of the head....This is common and will clear up soon....
Good Luck!
