In the traditional teachings (several religions), humans are the only beings with a soul. Based on that, I would have to say - no, the body does not require a soul to live. Animals live fine without a soul.

Christians view that as the Spirit (yet, I don't recall any of them calling the Holy Spirit the Holy Soul).
Jews view it as Spirit + Body = Living Soul.... so if you're alive, in a physical body, you Are a Soul.
As for Spirit - well, I personally believe that is part of living, so you would need it. But what, Exactly, it is, I couldn't say.......

Of course you need a soul to live. A soul is what we are, a body is something we have.....It is not the other way around!

to live all we need is a body
to think all we need is a spirit
to live grows a soul via your lifes loves and hates
a soul is if you like a witness,record of that which you call your guilt/credit ,when we loose our soul ego we haver only the pure spirit that remains
spirit can reincarnate the soul cant.

Animals are alive and if I'm correct the christians don't believe that animals have souls. But anyone who has had a pet knows about the true love and happiness that animals can feel.
