The support for capital punishment in Islam and Christianity makes them seem nothing more than the religions of vengence.
Can someone help me find the "peace" and "love" displayed in killing criminals?

For those who point to prevention: Does the end justify the means? Couldn't that be used to support killing in any context?

.
If someone wants to die, is it okay in your religion to provide the means? If someone wants to live, even in jail, is it okay in your religion to kill them anyway?

So, these answers suggest strongly that the religions of peace and love mean that there is peace and love for those who believe, and the rest of the world gets neither, but rather barbaric treatement at the hands of believers.

The contraddictions of life!!
Do you know that the Catholic Church actually (I am Roman Catholic) "invented" the so called 'Capital Punishment'? Do some research, and you will be amazed on what you will find out. What happened in 'Campo De Fiori' in Rome, for instance, is frightening just to hear of.
Just as frightening, is that in a 'civilized' country such as the U.S., still the Death Penalty persists ... and the "getting-down-on-his-knees-to- p r a y" George W. Bush attacks any country that he doesn't like executing a number of innocents.

You believe in justice, don't you?
1. If I steal your sheep worth, say $30, and I'm found out, what would you expect as a just punishment? Return that sheep or a similar one or pay you the $30 plus any additional expense you incurred in resolving the matter. You agree? It's called justice.
2. If I steal your 2005 BMW and crashed it, and I'm caught, would you accept $30 as just recompense?
3. If I cut off your right hand with a machette in a fight, justice demands that: 1. I forfeith my right hand (which wouldn't do you any good), OR 2. I make restitution so that you can live (and not starve to death because you can't work, OR 3. I go to jail for maybe 5 years (still wouldn't do you any good).
4. If I premeditatively kill someone (murder, not manslaughter or self-defence), then I have forfeited my life. It has nothing to do with deterrent or vengence. It's justice.
And where does peace and love come in?
Let's assume that you live in a small town. There is a serial rapist/killer on the loose in you town, and in the last 3 months, he has raped and murdered 4 young ladies, including your 17-year-old sister. Then he is caught. If you had a gun in your hand and the power to execute him, what would you do?
Here are your choices :
1. Sentence him to life-imprisonment. Taxpayers will pay over $50 000 for him every year he spends in jail. You don't have better use for that money, I assume.
2. Tell him, "I forgive you. I love you. Go your way in peace and may God bless you".
3. Shoot him. That way you can be sure that the community wouldn't have to cope with him again. With him dead, there will be peace and love in the town.
You are confused because you think 'peace' and 'love' are for everyone. The laws are like the rails on a bridge. If you stay within, you're safe. If you step over it, you reap the consequences. Hopefully, your town will have love and peace without the menace of a rapist/killer on the loose.

God said to live by the laws of your country as is right and proper. I support the death penalty because I would rather see a criminal not be allowed to become a repeat offender and mooch off society getting better treatment than the homeless who live on the streets doing no wrong. The peace and love displayed in the killing of criminals is tough love which creates peace by keeping them from returning to the street to find new victims.

Religions that support peace and love also support justice and freedom of choice. If you choose to kill an innocent soul, then you choose the punishment as well; the result of your action is no secret. Everyone is accountable to that they do so long as no external factors affect them (mental sickness, self-defense, stealing out of hunger, etc).
Look at the world! People know that they will be killed if they murder and it does not stop many of them. How will the world be if the punishment was different?
Peace

thrilling question and an exceedingly debatable one too. it somewhat is authentic Jesus became against "eye for an eye fixed" and forgiveness is the inspiration on which a society can somewhat stay peacefully. it somewhat is okay for Christians to prepare it in my opinion yet I doubt it somewhat is applied on a nationwide point. this could provide the criminals very almost a unfastened hand. people who do not concern God isn't deterred via something different than danger to their own lives. frequently human beings oppose capital punishment on the inspiration that it somewhat is barbaric. yet what regarding the criminals? Do they act humanely while they snuff out harmless lives? For them even the capital punishment would not be sufficient. i think of a society gets what it merits. Criminals do not concern something different than the ruthless punishment. while God general the country of Israel He observed to it that criminals have been dealt with ruthlessly. i think of it became for a reason. the very actuality that we witness such heinous crimes being dedicated shows that our punishment equipment isn't sufficient. it might instill such concern interior the hearts of could-be criminals that they could think of two times in the previous committing against the regulation. and that i don't think of even capital punishment can provide sufficient deterrent.

Capital punishment is fair when society as a whole benefits from it. It is rarely the case but for instance paedophiles have a high rate of re-offending and a high cost in jails because they need to be protected. Why should society pay the bill for their depravity. End it and let it be a deterrent to others thinking about it. By all means call me a barbaric Christian but don't tell me you would not feel the same if it was your child.

What this does is it sends a clear message to anyone thinking of doing a crime that they'll get the same punishment. That brings peace to the rest of us as we do not have to live in fear that something like this will happen again. At least by this same person as he'll be gone.
It's also a very loving thing to do to protect the many from the few that would do such abominable things.

Pretend you are a god-fearing christian. You follow the bible to the letter. Then you see some heathens over here who do not follow the bible at all. Male Heathen's girlfriend comes over to spend the night, they drink, and he gives his deadbeat dad no honor at all. To top it all off, he says god does not exist! You remember Chronicles 15:12-13 where God said "everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman".
You look at all your fellow christians and are overcome with christian love for them, and they feel the same for you. So the whole lot of you stone these heathens to death in order to make the community a better, more christian place. When the heathens are gone, peace in the sense of no disruption to the christian lifestyle, is restored to the community.
*Edit* Organized religion is a way for leaders to have control over people. Many of the biblical crimes that deserve the death penalty are acts that promote human rights. Women taking control over their sex lives, people worshipping a god who is ok with slavery and with men selling their dauthers, etc. Religion is a way to keep people down, and we all know that leaders will kill insurgents.

Gee let's find peace and love, and hugzzz and kisses and get all warm, and fuzzy, by letting murderers, child molesters, rapists, etc, spend the rest of their sick lives living in the recreational facilities better known as prisons, eating three squares a day while children in our country starve, and they spend their time going to court for stupid things like their human rights were violated in prison because they weren't given the peanut butter of their choice. (Actually happened). Meanwhile, we could send a message and put the fear of God into a bunch of those other devils out there that might be considering committing the same crime that if you get caught, you're going to pay with your life!
