What is the best way to handle a noisy new neighbor?

I have lived in my residential neighborhood for 5 years now. As with all neighborhoods, people move in and people move out. Recently, some new neighbors moved in that are extremely noisy, but especially late (3am) at night. I'm assuming they go out and party because this seems to happen almost regularly now on certain nights of the week. When they get home, they hang out outside and before they crew of them leave, they unnecessarily rev up their loud Redneck Diesel Trucks as if its a way to be macho and cool. But actually they are just being immature drunks. What should I do? If it wakes me and wife up, it must be affecting others, and possibly young children in our neighborhood too.

The first approach should be a friendly one, go to them during the daytime and be very nice, just tell them that you have been woken up several times late at night from people at their home reving up their trucks, and ask if they can ask their friends to be more quiet late at night. Hopefully , but doubtful that will take care of the problem. If it continues, at least you can say you tried to be nice when you call the police the next time. Most neighborhoods do have noise ordinances, and these people can be fined for not respecting them. Another possible approach...are they renters?...call their landlord and complain, most rental contracts include rules about noise and parties, and if they are not respecting those rules, they may get kicked out. Your town, like most, probably has a 'noise ordinance', banning loud or unreasonable noise between the usual night time hours. In my town in New Jersey, the noise ordinance is in effect from 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. Anyone violating it can expect the police at their door and can be cited ... it's enforced rigorously!

If you don't have the ordinance, you surely have police. Just call them ... they'll come out!

Call the law each and every time. Eventually they'll get tired of coming out for this and really nail them with some good tickets. Plus they (the neighbors) will get tired of paying the fines and move out. Every city/town has noise limit laws especially night time laws.

I would say bring over a cake or dessert, and introduce yourselves and welcome yourselves to your new neighbors. Then casually mention that the noise is an issue and that some of the other neighbours have complained about it. Bringing a gift should, at the very least, make them feel guilty about the noise and will show that you're being nice and neighborly, not just coming over to complain.

Call the police or sheriff's department and report the noise. There is really no other way. If you go out there and confront them, they may decide to be macho and beat you up. Since they will probably not limit themselves to one-on-one and attack as a gang, it is not masculine to let those whose job it is go tell them to quiet down.

You're assuming that they go out and party....then you state that they are actually immature drunks.....whatever it be..... if they've just recently moved in....put a stop to it before it goes on any longer. You can let the police handle it and the police can keep your name anonymous.

If your in England you can report them for noise disturbance its not a quick process but it works cos there then it with ASBO's and if they break they then they can be prosecute further. Failing that sneak out and stick potatoes in there exhaust pipes but I didn't say that. Hope you get sorted

Well, it could be dangerous by confronting them so it's best to call the police. At least they can be fined for drunk driving or disorderly conduct. Don't put up with that crap.
