John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

+ Bishops +

The Apostles were in authority with Peter and today's Bishops are the direct successors of the Apostles.

+ Priests +

Present day priests and deacons are the successors of the presbyters so often mentioned in the New Testament.

First of all, nuns are not "heads of authority" in the Catholic Church.

Neither are priests, really.

Only the bishops in union with the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) are.

"Bishop" is simply a derivative of a Greek word which means pastor or shepherd. And the word "pastor," as you noted, is in the Bible.

There's also something else in the Bible -- Jesus commissioning the Apostles with the earthly authority to minister to His Church and His people on earth.

Christ commissioned the Catholic Church -- the one against which He said the powers of hell would not prevail -- with the authority to propagate doctrine, moral teachings, and disciplinary rules and practices. There are several verses in the Bible that tell us this.

It doesn't directly come out and say anything at all about popes, priests or nuns. However, the catholic church sees Paul as the Rock that Jesus founded his church on and therefore consider him the first pope. I am not sure where the other two factions came into being other than to say they are probably considered brothers and sisters in christ. It does say in the bible to use no one as an intercessory to God but Jesus himself and to pray your prayers in silence. And it also says call none father but the Father in heaven. So who knows?

The Bible does mention bishops. the Pope is the bishop of Rome. Priests are ministers and nuns would fall in the category of teachers. Let's not split hairs over language.

They are everywhere in the Bible, but unless you consider the "New Testament" as part of the Bible they aren't really such a good thing.

The prophecies of the old testament, like Isaiah, indicate that those who rule in the times of the Messianic Destruction are pompous and wicked, and that includes both governments and the religious bodies. The fall of one such body of people known as "Babylon," is described in Isaiah 14. "Babylon" is a descriptive name of a people who can be recognized as "confused, by mixing." Their "leader" is known as "Lucifer, the shinging one," or the "morning star."

"Lucifer" is over the "house of Jacob," which is what the "followers of Immanuel" from the previous chapters indicate. They are the ones who support "Israel" and provide them their land on which to call their own. "Israel" then turns the "house of Jacob" into their "handmaids" and "servants." Following that we find the cities of the earth destroyed, and everyone disrespecting some guy, for not fulfilling his obligation of protection that he promised. That guy is then identified by a name that indicates something about him that should be identifieable when he "goes down."

"Lucifer," means "Light-Bearer," so it's not really hard to understand the connotations. Since he is ridiculed about not being able to protect those he promised to, and his name means "light-bear" we can conclude that he promised protection from death and hell, and did it in "the light."

He gets to live through the destruction of the cities and most of the earth. His future is predicted, and the result of his downfall indicates a "weakening of the nations."

One of his and his people's other characteristics is described as "boisterous." The more you know about that man, and the more you know about the Pope and his people, the easier it gets to understand the relationship of the description and current reality.

All you have to do is open your mind, and you will see it.

Sincerely,

Chris

The church existed quite nicely for three centuries before any Bible truly existed.

The church doesn't need to be defined by the Bible. The church was personally founded and given its' authority by Jesus Christ.

That ought to be good enough. If not, take it up with him.
