I took 3 semesters of spanish in college but I forgot so much. I was thinking of buying a computer software program, is this a good idea? if so, what are some good programs?

Hi. Yes computer software does help and is defintely better than nothing. These links below will take you to some free downloadable
programs and free online courses. All interactive.

Apart I would recomend you 3 basic things:

connect with spanish or hispanic people, & culture (films, videos, radio, books and comics) and or with many hispano-american societies in ther states have free courses, or activities etc

Write down ten words a day to develop vocabulary. Try always to find the phonetic or spelling resemblance and relationship between english and spanish which are many in any case. Spanish and English have in common a latin background, celtic and germanic roots albeit al greek sources. By finding the similarities between words your memory and meaning of that word will be reinforced and hence recall enhanced.

Finnaly the grammars do also have many similarities for same above mentioned reasons. Here you can use several tricks or shortcuts remebering that:

Most English participles ending in ed conected etc in spanish operate the same. Maintaining the root and changing the suffix ado, edo, ido (depending of conjugation) This way you can try to gguess-speack new words EG. conect rootr remove english ed and substitute for ado, edo , ido. Here conectado.
Using this system you can guess many words.
Same with gerunds running, doing, connecting etc
just maintain englis roots connect take the ing ending and add ando, endo, iendo, connect +ando conectando = connecting.

and remember the difference between ser and estar.
ser- permanent
estar- temporary.

Although there are exceptions to this ruyle due to culture such as estar muerto - it indicates some of the cultural attitudes towards death and resurection etc. Thsi previous rule is easy and works well.

You can be a an born idiot - eres tonto
or temporary idiot_ maybe due to steress, high or whatever - estás tonto.

Anyway find more connections yourself and do all these and use the programs, the more you inmerse yourself in all these things the nearer youll be to your goal

I'm sure you could pick up on the Spanish language fairly quickly if you've already taken it. You just need to use the language in order to keep it. If you have a friend or can find a friend that is fluent in Spanish, ask them to only speak Spanish to you, Listen to Spanish Music (If you like Pop, listen to Latin-Pop to start off like Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, or Marc Anthony etc.) because some of their songs in Spanish are just the Spanish versions of their English songs. If you can, watch television in Spanish. Good Luck and I hope this was helpful.

I got my minor degree in spanish and have taken courses since high school. I do not consider myself fluent because I only know the text book stuff. Sure I could communicate, minimally. But the students who had gone on missions or spent time in a spanish speaking country-were so much more advanced and comfortable speaking. I think online software can help you with the basics, but honestly you just need to get out there and get immersed!

If you have a friend that speaks Spanish, that would be great, also you can go get a book or software. Once you have those, use your friend to converse with you in Spanish, that would help you remember your Spanish...good luck

Get the "Rosetta Stone" software. It associates words and phrases with objects. Many of my friends and associates have used this to brush up on Spanish before business or pleasure travel to Spanish speaking countries.
