maybe start with a movie, hopefully something like Blood Diamond that you can discuss afterwards. I'd avoid a meal before since he's shy. He will need some time to be around you to be able to open up. A meal is full of pressure to be witty and funny and smart, all the stuff that makes a shy guy shy.

Lunch, coffee, drinks, etc is always a good idea because it's less intimidating. But, if you think you'll be shy during the date, choose an activity that will keep you both busy to fill any quiet times... such as mini golf, bowling, ice skating, etc.

Just ask! What's the worse that could happen? :)

i dont know about movies, it's kind of wasting the time you could be spending getting to know her..i say do something where lots of people are, or a place where you guys do somethign active (maybe play at the arcades, go to a fair, a concert) you know, things like that will create a different kind of bond, s he'll feel more comfortable around you that way too because both of you wont be so worried about "what is he/she thinking, do i look funny? what should i say?" the converstaion will just come more naturally and you guys will have other things to think about like the game you're playing or whatever.
, it'll be easier to open up. trust me! goodluck~ ^_~*

Go with a group of people that both you and him know... Let him warm up... Make the second date the one that you go alone. It worked on me. I'm very shy.
