probably because we have stats, doctors , and treatment facilities. many countries hide the mentally ill , and have little or no psychiatric facilities, so it is unfair to say the us has higher patients than the rest of the world. we really don't know. also it is unfair to call them psychos. if you were to refer to psychos, there are probably more walking the streets that have never been in a psychiatric hospital

Not sure of the stats, but there are several factors to consider:

1. Family units aren't as strong.
2. Cost of mental health not available to all, and it's often hard to obtain suitable help for long.
3. Patients in institutions were pushed out and some are still on the streets.
4. Not all people with mental problems take their medications once they are diagnosed and prescribed.

It's a never ending circle.

Its wrong to say that USA has the maximum number of psycho patients....the reason for the statistics which show the maximum number of psycho people are in usa is because usa is a developed country and hence more people can go to a psychiatrist when needed...but in other developing countries(like i'm from India) about 40% of people dont go to a doctor because of various reasons(such as financial reasons, social and blind faith or superstition)....hence only 60% of the cases come to be known.
I live in india....and there are only 4 or 5 cities (including where i live) where people are aware enough or not ashamed(socially) to go to a psychiatrist.

Same goes for other developing countries.

Yes, its becuse of their living styles and their lack of culture. There was a good study published that tracked mexican immagrants through two generations, the first (mexican-born) had a mental health index similar to that of mexicans (much better than americans), the next generation had a sharp increase in depression and other mental problems closer to the US average. I think its because things like culture, roots, community and identity get lost in this society and replaced with materialism and individualism that leave americans mentaly and spititually lost

there may appear to be more physco patients in the US, because, in other countries society forces these people to live in their homes and not to go out. so you dont see such people that often. i seriously doubt it due to teens leaving home.most of these pshyco cases are either genetics or early developmental (ages 0-5) in nature.

I think the US wants to provide help for those that are mentally ill, where in other countries, the majority mentally ill rule.

I don't disagree that there are problems here but would like to know where you are that you see so many psych patients?

I think it's because we've decided that disciplining our children is "bad" for them. We're morons, ok? We have kids having kids and we have shows like Montel Williams. It's no wonder, really.
