Yeah, it started in Eden...pfft... now for a real answer: I bet he didn't start at the bottom of the ladder, he just invented the idea that everyone else has to. That way, he could sit comfortably on top of everyone underneath him.

Yes, he made the ladder, climbed the first rung, said "follow me" and kept climbing until he reached the top. Then he fell off, and others jumped off after him.
