Criminals, regardless of the crime, have one main thing in common: they think emotionally instead of rationally. Instead of thinking something through, they act on impluse which driven by anger, sadness, excitement, etc.

White collar criminals have to be in full control of themselves, their every day actions and trails in order to keep the long con going.
The only criminals that are really "out of control" are the ones with nothing to loose. They are the most dangerous. And it's really not about controling themselves but about the choices they make.

My husb being a Judge for many years I have seen parents bring even 6 wk olds in with them to our house to tell "their" side of a story about fighting (during drinking) at all hours of the night. These babies grow up in a house where they are not taught anything but bad behavior. Some manage to go in a good direction thank goodness, but living in turmoil all their lives is hard to break from without that deep desire to get out of it and their spirits have been broken. Everyone has the same education opportunities now so they can't use that excuse....but the gov't has helped also by paying them to stay home to draw free money, free medical care, and free living. Its sad really, but then its so great to see the groups now coming out of that and really doing something with their lives. Husb & I both in Public office as Mayors and Judges & Medical field is where my answer comes from.

If they understand the difference between right and wrong (for your question lawful and unlawful) then it's a choice. Albeit a choice they consider to be made out of necessity, but a choice all the same.

By the way the correct expression is "Why can't criminals control themselves?"

Depending upon the crime, sometimes crimes are committed out of need...such as the cliche example of stealing a loaf of bread to feed your family. However, most definately not all crimes are out of necessity. Criminal behavior can be learned...through home enviornment and upbringing. This does not excuse criminal behavior but to some degree can explain it. Many crimes are committed under the influence of alcohol and drugs which inhibit judgement. Also different mental problems such as depression can cause a person to commit criminal behavior. As I said before this does not excuse criminal behavior... nor reveal direct motives only gives suggestions of background reasons for criminal behavior.

I have worked with criminals for 20 years. They dont control themselves because they do not want to. They are self centred, ego centric and self serving. Addictions and personal history only adds to it but does not make one a criminal. the pay offs are worth it so that is why they do it.

What's that supposed to mean? Everyone has a degree of free will, self-determination.... but sometimes people choose poorly, or have deep mental/emotional/social problems.

Why does any one do what they do? Some people don't know how to support themselves honestly - ie little education, no experience etc. Sometimes people lose hope and get mad at society. Sometimes people lose there rationality ---
through lust --- leading to rape,
through addiction --- leading to drug problems,
through anger and hate --- violence
etc. etc.

When we allow the negative aspects of ourselves to overpower the positive ones, we make negative effects on the world. Some people can learn to become good, others require incarceration or even capital punishment.

That's what it means to be human.

They can, but they choose not too.

Don';t give them a free pass, what they do is a choice, nothing more. Have no pity for them.
