remember the trombone goes up to 2 octives it's very very tall with fully out and the notes are a semitone apart

There are seven real positions on a trombone. Sometimes you might play a note in a position called a short second position or a short third position but these are not counted as extra positions on a trombone. The longer the trombone's slide is extended the lower the note is. The reason there are more than seven notes on a trombone is because of the speed that your lips vibrate in the mouthpiece. Slow vibrating lips create lower notes, and faster (tighter) vibrating lips cause higher notes.

there are seven actual positions.... but when your trombone players suck there can be lots more.....
