yes, it is possible, but I think you have a specific time frame to do it in. It's called "rescind my bid" and you can do it i believe from the same screen where you confirm your bid. I've done it once, and you have to give a reason. I stated that my question was never answered by the seller and I was worried it was a fake, and they allowed it. Read the instructions carefully, they tell you how to do it, but i had a hell of a time finding the actual button they tell you to click on! But I did find it, but it didn't say "cancel." unless they've changed the wording, I believe it's rescind.
Good Luck!

They have the obvious andd preferred route.
Wait until near the end in hopes someone else outbids you. Then consider the devious method which I would advise against for ethical and in fact legal reasons unless you have a LOT of money at risk for something you truely have NO use for - open a dummy account, outbid yourself, close the dummy account and the dummy email account to put the account under, let the seller know immediately with some garbage excuse like you are leaving the country so they can promptly repost and get credit from eBay.
And no, not only would I not do this, I would recommend against this except for the most extreme case. By the same token, you aren't costing the seller or eBay anything other than the hassle of getting credit back from eBay and relisting.

Yes, you can, if you've made some sort of mistake the first time you bid.
Here's the guidelines from EBAY:
You can retract a bid or a Best Offer for the following reasons:
You made a typographical error and entered the wrong bid amount. For instance, you bid C$99.50 instead of C$9.95. If this occurs, enter the correct bid amount immediately after you retract your bid. If you do not place another bid, the retraction will be in violation of eBay's policy and could result in your suspension. Please review the retraction guidelines if you need to retract your bid.
The description of an item you have bid on changed significantly after you placed your bid.
You cannot contact the seller. This means that you tried to call the seller, but his or her phone number doesn't work, or that you have tried emailing a message to the seller and it comes back undeliverable.
