The cat may have eaten something salty like ham or bacon - that will cause hair fall. Sometimes inordinate shedding could be cuased by an inadequate diet or food allergy. Have you changed brands of cat food lately? If not then it could be allergy from certain air-born particles. My cat started getting bald around the legs and belly area 4 years ago as a result of marble dust in the air where we used to live. His fur got back to normal as soon as we moved out - that's how I found out that it was dust particles of a particular sort (he used to roll around on the ground there).

Is the hair falling out on its own or is the cat pulling out the hair?

When my cat Bubba gets a fungal infection, he pulls out the hair at the site. A small oozing sore is under the hair that will spread. It's called ringworm. I take him to the vet for steroid shots. I get a vial of bacterial killing ointment, too. He licks these sores and spreads them to other places on his body. Ringworm is contagious to people, too, so I check him often in warm weather for him pulling out hair.

If the hair is falling out on its own, it might be cat mange. I've noticed a connection from where hogs or pigs were once penned and dog and cat mange. Even if the swine have been gone for decades, the chance of mange increases. I don't know why this is, but I have seen this happen several times with dogs or cats getting the mange from old swine sites.

he's shedding. He may have grown to much with hair with the seasons changing. So now he is shedding what he doesn't need. If its making bald spots though, you may want to check with a vet. Could be an allergic reaction or bad diet.

Cats shed all the time, I wouldn't worry unless it looks really bad.

Happy New Years!

My sisters cat was losing hair so she took it to the vet and they said it was from stress. Maybe your cat is stressed out. In any case, I would take him to the vet because it may be a medical problem.

The other answers make excellent points; but, it might be a thyroid problem. My cat lost her hair; I took her to the vet and we put her on medicine (I grind it up in her food) every day. She's doing great, now.

There is not enough information here to make a good assumption as to what is wrong or not wrong with your kitty.

Depending on how he is losing his hair, bald spots, etc it could be 20 different things.

Can you give us more info as to what is actually happening?

I would take him to the vet if you are seeing something unusual in your pet.

Either your cat is in the shedding mood, or you are feeding it something bad. From what i experience, if you feed it, corn, coconut or anything salty, they will start to shed. So if you feed them something salty or what i said, you should stop feeding it those items. If you don't feed them neither, you should ask your vet doctor or go to a pet store.

Most cats are like that its gettin hotter so ur cat is now loosin fur (just like dogs do). It is competely normal, unless that is that ur cat is loosin large amounts of hair that u can see his skin through, if not he is normal & healthy.
