I have heard that it specifically commands this in several places, and that if you are a fundamentalist muslim, you would have to agree with this. I saw an interview with the king of Saudi Arabia and he agreed that this was true, but that most do not choose to take things to these extreems.

As I understand it, the verses refer to Jews and Christians specifically, not "idolitors".

Yes. In one place it reads to cut off the hand and foot from opposite sides of the body to convince infedels to convert, then if this doesn't work to go ahead and kill them.
There are two refrences in the Koran to kill unbelievers. Surah 9:5 and Surah 5:33

No the Quran does not teach us to kill Jews & Christians (People of the Book) if they do not convert.

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.
[Al-Quran 2:256]

The following verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality:

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful."
[Al-Qur’an 9:5]

Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."
[Al-Qur’an 9:6]

We do not have kill or convert anybody.. Extremists are following their own opinion and not the scholars of old. The verses are about fighting are the idolators who were adamantly fighting the Muslims when they proclaimed belief in God alone.

No Compulsion in Religion

Allah said,

[لاَ إِكْرَاهَ فِى الدِّينِ]

(There is no compulsion in religion), meaning, "Do not force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear. Therefore, there is no need to force anyone to embrace Islam. Rather, whoever Allah directs to Islam, opens his heart for it and enlightens his mind, will embrace Islam with certainty. Whoever Allah blinds his heart and seals his hearing and sight, then he will not benefit from being forced to embrace Islam.''

my freind tell me!
Narrated Abû Hurairah : Allah’s Messenger said, “Allah looks not at your figures, nor at your outward appearance but He looks at your hearts and deeds.”(Muslim)

Narrated Anas: Allah’s Messenger said, “Allah the Exalted has said: ‘O son of Âdam, I shall go on forgiving you so long as you pray to Me and aspire for My forgiveness, whatever may be your defaults. O son of Adam, I do not care even if your sins should pile up to the sky; and should you beg pardon of Me, I would forgive you. O son Adam, if you come to me with an earthful of sins and meet Me, not associating anything with Me (in worship), I would come to you with an earthful of forgiveness.” (At-Tirmidhi)

only reasons for violence outside of criminal proceedings is to protect fellow muslims

the fact is that muslims respect jews and christians as people of the book, they understand the shared heritage and just consider them a bit behind the times
