I think you make a very good point. Lets not underestimate the subltle power of words and persuasion. Calling it global warming puts in peoples heads an idea of, gently the plantet warming, and in a lot of people heads in the U.K at least, in the middle of december that doesn't sound like such a bad thing.
I do think if it became commonly known as "The countdown to extinction" or "Everybody dead soon" it would have to change the way the everyday guy percived it in their minds on some level at least.

I think this global "overheating" is perfectly normal every ten thousand years. The planet heats up and then goes into an ice age stage.

People will only be bothered when they see the growing glaciers heading their way. This kind of activity will mean starvation will accompany the ice and unseasonably cold temperatures. Sleet in summer will be common place. I see massive migrations southward as people flee the glaciers and starvation. When you see the populations of southern hemisphere countries being killed off by either mysterious diseases or war then you know the time has started to pack for warmer climes. It will occur gradually and appear like a normal event, but actually it is man made by greedy and powerful secret society types.

I think for some people "global overheating" would not bother them at all. when in fact they don't care about it. But in my opinion this "global overheating' is not a perfect term to describe the situation when there are some places get floods and there are other places in this globe gets drought in the same time.

Yes, people probably would be slightly more concerned if you started calling it "global overheating", but it wouldn't be true, would it? The world has been significantly warmer in the past than it is today, so who says that the current, slight, rise is "over" heating? So you'd be lying to the people to try and persuade them, and, personally, I think lying to the people to try and persuade them is wrong.

Not that that stops the global warming alarmists. Take 'joe r', above with his "Everybody dead soon" suggestion. Oh, so now global warming is going to kill the entire population of the planet is it? How's that for scaremongering?!

The truth is a lot of the global warming alarmists are lying to us. Whether it's the IPCC and their now infamous "hockey stick" graph which deleted the Medieval Warm Period (among other errors), Al Gore telling us that Mount Kilimanjaro's snow-cap is melting due to global warming, when it's not, it's due to deforestation (again, one among many of Al Gore's errors) or, the latest thing on the news, that global warming is killing all the polar bears (it isn't - see my sources), the fact is we are being miss-lead.

I don't know about you, but when I find out that someone has lied to me to try and persuade me that they are right, it tends to make me think the opposite. But, it's up to you. If you're happy to be lied to, then you carry on believing all the hype. Just don't expect me to join you in your delusion.

I don't think it matters what you call it - I think you have to engage people about what it is realistic to do about it. After all, I suspect that you are not yourself willing to make the sacrifices necessary to make a difference.

To get a US citizen down to sustainable levels of energy consumption (ie those which could be sustained for every citizen of Earth), you would have to cut YOUR PERSONAL consumption by over 90%. If you are not willing to do this, why should others take up the slack for you and suffer as a consequence.

It is clear from my experience that this is not going to happen. What is required is not replacing the odd car journey with a walk to the local shops. It means 90% less flying, almost no private car journeys, less winter heating, no air conditioning.

Are you up for the sacrifice? Put up or shut up.

people very much have the opinion that 'it won't happen to them' or 'what thy don't know won't hurt them'
It's people's attitudes that need changing.
