We got two kittens last night, who are four months old. They have come from a breeder and were kept in a cage outside. They are very frightened and once we finally got them out of the cat basket, they have now wedged themselves behind the washing machine. They did come out during the night and ate the food and drank water. However they have now got back behind the washing machine and I can't get to them. Any ideas on how to coax them out or should I just leave them there until they are ready to come out themselves (as I know they will eat when we are not around)?

They must still be quite scared, if you give them time, I'm sure they will adapt to their new environment.
Something similar happened with our cat when we got her three years ago. She wouldn't come out from behind the armchair in the living room but she eventually got used to our house and three years on she loves to come on our lap and stay there for hours.
If you want to have sociable cats in the future then you need to make sure you handle them as much as possible.
To coax them out I would recommend sitting on the floor next to the washing machine and talking to them as if they were human beings. Be very patient with them and try not to make any loud noises or sudden movements when you are in the kitchen. Also I wouldn't recommend switching the washing machine on while they are behind there. Once they are out make sure that they cannot get back behind there as it is very dangerous for them. Good luck!

You need a puppy pen, I know I say this all the time, but they really are a godsend, try to get them out and install them in a pen so they can see the household carrying on and get used to things like vacuum cleaners, people walking about etc, and they will feel safe in there, with a nice bed, litter tray etc, if you have to move the washing machine out so be it, its a dangerous place for kittens, they could wee on wires and electrocute themselves, or chew wires with the same effect.

I really get peed off with so-called breeders who dont familiarise kittens with a working household or handle them so they can be good pets, if you dont handle a kitten from an early age they will rarely turn into affectionate cats, note for the future, if a kitten you want to buy isnt part of a household, dont buy it.

Don't try to coax them out leave them to get used to the different environment, once they have decided they are safe they will start to venture out, gradually put tempting treats near to where you sit but don't attempt to touch the kittens for a while, you will find they will gradually come to you, then you can fuss them a little at a time until they get used to you. Some kittens take a few hours, some a few days, others longer, ut if you push it you will frighten them more
