Short answer: Yes, they are.

Long answer: If you're asking if you're allowed to defend yourself with weapons, of course. The degree to which you are varies depending on your state. In FL for example, recent legislation changed statutes from requiring a first attempt to retreat before defending one's self with lethal force. Now in FL anyone can respond with lethal force to defend themselves without having to attempt retreat first.

If you're asking "for" as in is that the purpose behind the allowance, then yes, in two respects. The weapons are legally protected by case law as a means of self-defense against criminals, and originally protected by the Constitution as a means of self-defense against the Government. The second amendment guarantees the right to bear arms to support militias such that no government can become a tyranny over its people. As opposed to those who would have you believe that guns should be restricted to rifles and shotguns for hunting or not even that, the highest law of the land, the US Constitution guarantees us the right to weapons capable of killing a potentially tyrannical army wielded by a would-be dictator.

A good head on your shoulders is the best defense weapon in NYC. For some reason,(sarcasm) people and their friends with weapons tend to end up in situations around other people with weapons in this town. Those are the people that get hurt 99% of the time and make the papers. Besides, a good criminal, who's caught you not looking out and using your head, isn't going to give you the time to use anything anyway. And if you are looking out and are sharp, the criminals will look elsewhere. That's why people don't carry here and we're the safest large city in America.

Weapons are allowed, for ownership and can be used in self defense. There are some laws restricting certain persons from owning a weapon! Examples would be a convicted felon or a person who suffers from chronic mental illness!

Some types of weapons are not allowed at all!

That depends on what kind of weapon and in which country are you. In California, you can't own a 50 caliber rifle but you can still own a shotgun or an M1 Garand. In Singapore however, you are not even allowed a blade, much less a gun.

For the most part yes, in your home. Depending on the state you live in and weopon of choice, traveling with weapons is a different story. Some states have carry and conceil permits for hand guns. These require a background check, class and test.
