When the scabs begin to fall. Anyways when a unaffected person is exposed to an infected person, you can never know when the infection has spread and the incubation sets in. Sometimes even after close association people do not develop chicken pox. Cleanliness is a key rule in maintaining the surroundings of the person infected and thereby reducing the infection from spreading. Even after the scabs have fallen and the person concerned is free, the infection still persist in the room. So one can easily contract the infection same even after a few days.

Chicken pox is contagious in the last few days of the incubation period till when all the lesions are scabbed. It is most contagious just before the rash appears and in the first few days of the rash.
