Prawns and shrimp look a lot a like except for the size. They look like a cross between a shrimp and a lobster, with their bodies having narrower abdomens and longer legs than shrimp. Shrimps are found in salt or warm water and prawns are freshwater creatures. Prawns migrate, like salmon, from salt water to fresh water to spawn. Sometimes, people loosely use prawn to describe any large shrimp , especially those that come 15 (or fewer) to the pound (also called "jumbo SHRIMP"). But they shouldn't. You can use the same recipes for both.

Prawns are crustaceans, belonging to the sub-order Dendrobranchiata. They are similar in appearance to shrimp, but can be distinguished by the gill structure which is branching in prawns but is lamellar in shrimp. The sister taxon to Dendrobranchiata is Pleocyemata, which contains all the true shrimp, crabs, lobsters, etc

"In British usage, prawn is the more general term for small crustaceans and shrimps are very small ones with flattish bodies. In American usage shrimp is the general term. Places where English is not the mother tongue use either term at random, e.g. frozen king prawns from Thailand are often laballed as shrimps."
