I use my nails and fingertips when I do it. I never feel any pain or irritation anything, but should I be more gentle?

Yes, that's what I've always heard the pros say. Otherwise you can damage sensitive hair follicles. I never use my nails. But I do use my fingertips to gently massaging my scalp after I apply conditioner in the shower. I don't even slide them, though. I simply put them on a particular area and then use a slight squeezing motion to stimulate circulation in the scalp. You may want to bend over while you're doing this so the top of your head is pointing down. This brings even more circulation to the scalp while massaging, as well as being very relaxing.

I've been using this technique for years. It can't be hurting--I still have a full head of thick hair at an age when many of my peers are beginning to lose theirs. Of course, part of that is genetics. But at the very least, you'll increase the circulation to the scalp and give yourself a few moments of deep relaxation.

If you don't have dandruff, your hair is not falling out, and your scalp is not itchy or inflamed, I don't see any problem.

Actually, stimulating your scalp through massage/scrubbing increases the blood flow, which can help get rid of any scalp problems you have. There are tons of accupressure points on your scalp too, so rubbing them can be really relaxing. Just make sure you don't scratch/irritate the scalp, because that leaves you vulnerable to fungal/bacterial infection.

no u should never scratch or scrub. the proper way is to first rinse of your hair for atleaste 3 min just let the water run thru your hair and while your doing this comb your hair so u can get oil or dirt out your hair. once you finish that put the shampoo in and gently rub the your hair with your fingertips that promotes hair growth. make sure all the shampoo is out your hair and make sure your hair is dry because dried up shampoo and exposed wet hair can cause hair loss

Why do you use your nails? The finger tips are more than enough to get it clean. You don't need to claw your scalp up, lol.

you should be more gentle. you may think youre getting your hair cleaner but what youre really doing is aggrivating your scalp causing it to produce more oil faster. you could also be ripping hairs out.

massage is a better word - don't scrape and scratch - but massage your scalp to increase blood flow to your hair roots - all over!

Yes! if you're head is too clean, that can attract lice! And there might be a lot of scratches on your head.

It really is up to you. It feels good when you scratch your head while washing your hair.
