I'm sure you typed what you meant to type, exactly as you typed it, but I have to ask:

Are you sure you didn't mean "wmv"? That is a Windows movie file which can be played in Windows Media Player and VLC (and possibly a few other clients).

For that matter, try VLC for the smv as well. In my entirely biased and not-based-in-fact opinion: VLC can do anything!
