You may want to consider taking him to a speech and language specialist to determine if there's a disability.

Otherwise or in the meantime, three year olds not talking isn't unheard of, and I'll be honest - your kid isn't going to suddenly jump ahead of the curve. But the best thing you can do for him is to keep promoting his language development. Read to him. Talk with him constantly even if you don't think he understands. Play with him non-stop using words. The more language exposure he gets the more quickly and effectively he'll pick up and use language, regardless of any disability he may or may not have.

I'm not a doctor so don't take this as medical advice. If you have medical concerns you need a medical doctor... and it's not a bad idea at all in this case to see a specialist.

Most of all, just love him for the special and unique kid he is :)

Best wishes,

Mark

Just because the "hearing" is tested okay doesn't mean that the proper signals are necessarily getting to the brain. You might want to speak with an audiologist about Central Auditory Processing Disorder. This seems to occur rather commonly among people on the autistic spectrum, but it also occurs outside of that scope o people as well.

Basically, imagine a megaphone being piped directly into your ear. You'll hear all of the sound but it would be very difficult to distinguish one sound from another. As a result, learning to speak can be quite difficultm but I understand that most children who have this do learn to speak eventually. They may need extra assistance by creating an environment that is free of background noise.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck.

i can only give my opinion on this being that i am not a doctor but i would find a different dr, Hes 3 now he should be saying more than the few standard words that children learn at 8 months, it sounds like something may have occured with his seiuzers..... Feel freel to IM me to talk some more. Have you tried sign laungage? In all honesty i would demand testing. Drs seem to think that parents are idiots when it comes to thier children and that they know all but you deal with your child all the time and if you feel deep down that there is a problem and he wont do the brain scans and MRIS etc to check things out and potentially get to the bottom if it i would tell him that you were going to seek another opinion and keep right on going until you get answers. For example my youngest whom is 2 now, screamed and held her head behind her ears for the first 10 months of her life... screamed bloody murder had her in the drs weekly to get checked for ear infections drs kept tellin me she was fine cause she would do it spuradically a few hours a day and was all ways yankin on her ears and behind them.. when she was 10 months i went to the doctors and demanded a brain scan because i thought the worst tumors or something!! Well the first test they did was a fluid test, my baby needed tubes in her ears a simple surgical procedure that would have taken an 15 mins and she wouldnt have screamed her head off for the first 10 months of her life I was livid... But definatly keep seeking others opinions since aparently your dr sounds like all the others I have ran into... if its not visably broken or bleedin theres nothing wrong...... Good luck!!

Well, you just mentioned some pretty good indicators... seizure medications. Medications can have all kinds of effects on a child's cognitive growth, and having a "blip" in the brain (seizure) can cause differences in learning as well. The parents can have him evaluated by the local school district in which they live in order to have his delays assessed. Then, if he qualifies for special services, he can receive FREE services to help him from the school district.

I have heard in collage in my communications class that if you do not let the child speak freely or when he tries to talk he is told to be quiet it gives them the sense that he is not permitted to talk there for he doesn't feel that learning to speak is that important. But im not saying that they don't let the child speak. I have a cousin that is about the same age and does not speak well and we have been told by several people that he might have a hearing issue preventing him from being able to speak correctly.

A lot of children have speech delays. If there is an early intervention preschool in your area see if you can get him screened. If he gets accepted into the preschool they can help by getting him time with a Speech Pathologist everyday and interaction with other children and adults other that their parents can help.

A seizure attack or he is Epileptic?
If he is epileptic I can tell you it may be what amounts to a learning issue. He learns stuff, has a seizure and it intereferes with retention and recall.
Get him tested by an educational specialist.
