This is probably going to sound gross, but I use toothpaste on mine. I find that it dries mine out fairly quickly. I use either Colgate or Aquafresh, though I prefer Colgate.

I have the greatest "treatment" for cold sores - LYSINE - it is an amino acid supplement. You find it with the vitamins. If you take 500-1000 mg every couple of hours when you feel the cold sore coming on, it will prevent it or at least lessen it's outbreak. If you take Lysine along with vitamin C, you will increase the effectiveness.
I do not know why this works, or where this came from, but I use it and it really works.
I know that the cold sores can be brought on by stress and/or fatigue. The canker sores are usually more viral in nature. Stress or fatigue can affect your immune system's ability to fight off viral infections such as canker sores.
Good luck - feel better.

The best thing I have EVER tried for cold sores and it really works is Lactinex pills. Ask your pharmacist. They keep them refrigerated and you do not have to have a prescription to buy them. Start taking them at the first tingle of an approaching cold sore, and sometime it won't even go ahead and form! The second best thing I have ever tried is Acidophilus. It takes a little longer to work, but does work. I don't know why these things work, only that they do. I think there may be something in them that suppresses the herpes virus in the body. I have heard that apple cider vinegar applied topically helps dry out the sores and speed healing, but I have not had a cold sore since I heard that so I have not tried it yet.

Canker sores and cold sores are not related. What you should do for the cold sore is to go to the drug store and get an over-the-counter remedy for it. Ask the pharmacist for help. Many things can cause cold sores: stress, sunlight, being "run down", even diet (or so I have heard). One more thing - don't pick at the cold sore with your fingers or with your teeth. Avoid getting it infected.

Herpes Simplex Type 1 or herpes labialis

Pure, unadulterated Peppermint essential oil has been studied for its positive effects on the pain of herpes. Just a drop on the end of a Q-tip-- it will sting initially and then will heal up the lesion.

Canker sores are not caused by the Herpes virus-- they are known as "aphthous ulcers", and occur when your immune system is weakened, or can be caused by dental problems, rough brushing or hot food. The essential oil blend called "Thieves" (which contains cinnamon, cloves and rosemary) is effective in healing up canker sores (and also is good on cold sores).

There are a couple of remedy that works. Crush up an aspirin and then mix it with finger nail polish remover the kind that has acetone in it, make a paste and then put it on the sore. The other thing is ether, you can find this in starter fluid for a car. Spray a little on a rag and then rub it on the sore. Don't breath it in though because it can make you very sleepy.

They are indeed annoying. Just when they're almost healed and you bite into them again! I'm not sure about home remedies, I prefer the surefire way to get rid of them faster and safer rather than waiting for them to heal on it's own. Try Pyralvex, I'm sure it's available in most drug stores. It is used to relieve discomfort caused by cold sores, braces or dentures. Pyralvex contains antimicrobial properties to prevent further irritation or infection.
I recommend you try it cause it really works!
