I have read various articles on depression, as my daughter had it and we didn't like the medications either. As a lot of medications prescribed for depression can cause Parkinson's disease latter in life. Exercise, exercise, exercise. A strong body makes for a strong mind. Energy makes energy. The more you use, the more you will have. There is a gland in the brain that makes a chemical called dopamine. Researchers have found that it is similar to the euphoria that is felt while using cocaine or marijuana. You wont feel results in a day or 2. It could take as much as 3-6 months to feel a real difference. It does work. It will cure depression in most people. I would suggest a brisk walk for at least 20-30 min. daily. Chocolate also helps the happy gland become activated. The darker the better. White chocolate does no good. Potatoes fried in 1/4 C. of basil will also help. 1 or 2 potatoes that is. More that that at a time will make you fat and more depressed. Getting out of the house at least once a day, I divide my shopping trips to Walmart and use the express lane every time. That helps. Hope this is helpful to you.

Perhaps there is some other underlying problem? I'm speaking from my own experience - I was on and off several anti-depressants for years but never found one that I thought really worked well, although I suppose they helped some (Wellbutrin most of all). I also took xanax on and off for anxiety. A couple years ago I got a new doctor who diagnosed me with ADHD, and put me on stimulant meds for that. After about 6 months I came off the xanax completely with no effort, and soon after quit the wellbutrin, too, and I'm not depressed nor do I have the anxiety problems I used to. Don't know if this could be your deal, but it does sound like you need a fresh take on the situation?
Also, have you made "lifestyle changes"? Like exercising, not drinking alcohol, etc.? I'm sure you've heard it before, but drugs can't do it all!

Over the last five years I had begun to have increasingly withdraw into a downward spiral of depression..
But now with the method I can fully focus my energy and thoughts into a decisive line on how to make my life better constantly. And it works like magic! I'm beginning to attract people to me once again and things have just been looking up since then.

I take a combination Lexapro & Wellbutrin. First I was on Lexapro & I felt a little better, but then he put me on Wellbutrin w/it and I really did feel good. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right one. Don't give up though!! Also, I begin to see a psychologist and truly this has been the best medicine!!

Paxil makes you gain too much weight. Wellbutrin can increase your blood pressure. Effexor XR and Cymbalta work the same way (they are SNRI's, not SSRI's), and they're pretty damn strong. Try Lexapro or Sarafem (Sarafem is the exact same thing as Prozac - they just changed the name).

There are many anti-depression meds. The one that works for one may not work for another. I have heard that Lexapro is good. You just need to make an appointment with your Dr. and let them know you are not any better. GOOD LUCK

I know how you feel, as I struggled with depression also. It's hard to find a medicine that helps. I've been on Fluoxetine for about a year now, and I've felt much, much better since then. Good luck.

there is no ranking, efficacy of a medication depends on the individual... ask whomever is prescribing these meds. Sometimes it can take that long to find what works...yes, it can be frustrating, but don't give up...please share this information with your medical doctor or psychiatrist. always tell them if your meds aren't working and about side effects...Good Luck!

Zoloft seems to be pretty effective. Ask your Dr. to give it a try. It does take a couple of weks to take full effect but it does work in many cases
