Built-IN is ONLY BETTER if you do not use Satellite or Cable Services....

Those will always require a Set-Top box....so why not buy a TV that is designed for Set-top boxes and buy a Set-top box for it?

I did....I have DISH network, but I also selected a TV set with a built-in DIGITAL TUNER....That's a tuner that gets all the
"Over-the-air" channels (OTA) that are hi-definition.....but display those channels in 480 (SD) format...

Looks Damn good....noise-free, clean and sharp....But certainly not HD.
The HDMI /Component inputs are reserved for HD Dish Network when I can upgrade....I got DISH 2 years ago, and to upgrade I have to pay $200 for the HD box....NEW customers get it Free if they get the HD package....

I would think DISH would let OLD customers upgrade for the same deal....but those little "Robot-customer care specialists" can't even bring it up to their supervisors....(they don't have one!)

good answers. also an hd tuner built in is just a tuner to recieve over the air brodcasts. or any thing you get with rabbit ears or anntenna. if you dont think you will ever hook your tv up to an antenna. then you dont need one. but the difference in price between one with and one without is not that much any more so maybe you should get one with and hook up some rabbit ears or an amplified ( one you plug into the wall to boost reception) one. because every thing you recieve is free and most is clear perfect hd.

You never know what tuners manufacturers use, unless you open their boxes. It could be that a particular TV has a tuner that is better than the tuner a set-top box has, or the reverse.
I suppose you wonder if you would buy an HDTV-ready (no tuner) or HDTV. If you plan to always use a set-top box (cable or satellite), then HDTV-ready is OK.

The guys are right with the answers. Unless you want to go nuts with antennaes just get a tv that will work with the box from providers.
